I've never understood what's so objectionable about self-insertion, besides
the fact that they're so often badly written and not thought out. It seems
to me that it's more logical to condemn the author's lack of skill and not
the entire sub-genre. There are some excellent examples of self-insertion
out there, "Eight Days a Week" being my favorite, with "Ranma Goes to War"
close behind.

On the other hand, it's a fairly interesting idea.  If you went beyond it
to have the stranger start doing things on top of helping Ukyou, just to
look good, it'd be even better.  

By that's just my $.02.
