Chapter 2: ATTACKED: a Friend, reborn

Shelly answered the phone, "Hello, StarLeaf Computer Services,
this is Shelly, can I help you?. Cathy?, where have you been?. 
Len returned two weeks ago, WHAT?? you are?. But how...I mean the 
earth science of bio-technology can't do that yet, can it?. 
He did?, all of them?, well, it's a good thing I'm sitting down" 
she said, as she laughed and then asked "So what happened to your 
android body?, it is?, but why?. Oh really?, so there is now a 
council to  govern the foundation, is there?, how do your sisters 
feel about it?".

As she talked to Cathy, Shildy typed an e-mail to

attacker@cancom.ca:

"Cathy is on the phone with me right now, she said that she is now 
human, that Dawn brought a gestation chamber down before his Ship 
blew up and that she, her mother and Catty number 3534 (the one 
that was at the base in French Polynesia) used it to make all the
Catty androids human and that Captain Nebulart has stepped down as 
the chair of the Chaos foundation, turning the running of the 
foundation over to Catty and her sisters. Cathy says she'll be home 
today, she wants Mal and I to pick her and Denise up at the airport, 
she has a surprise for us all and she says that Catty-3534, 
the new one,will be coming to live with us also".

She sent the message, then returned to the phone call and said 
"I hope you don't mind, Cathy, but I just sent a message to the 
others via e-mail. We've all been worried that you weren't going 
to come back. Yes, the C-130 got back okay but you should know that,
Denise DID find you right?, yes it's all back at the hanger" 

She paused to listen for a minute, then said "Oh, she will?, well 
you tell her that she's welcome here anytime she wants to come!. 
Oh, we have been talking about returning some of the equipment to 
the Blossom, so the Central Guard will have a harder time finding 
us". Shildy told Cathy "Oh okay, you arrive in two hours?, 
we'll meet you there, bye-bye".

Shelly hung up the phone, then called out to Mal.
"Mal, lock the front door, will you?, we have to go pick up Cathy 
and Denise at the airport in two hours and I'm hungry. we'll eat 
first, then go get her". 

After lunch at the Knot Pub, on Dufferin St, the two women drove 
to the Halifax International airport, arriving 30 minutes before 
Cathy's plane was due. Shelly took the time to fill Mal in on 
what Cathy had said over the phone. 

"But, HOW?...oh never mind. If the Paranoid can change themselves 
into human form, I guess an android, that is already in that form, 
is much easier" Mal commented.

Shelly nodded "Cathy also told me that her old body is now wandering 
the World as a freelance journalist, under the name Catty Ray 
Caraway. and if we ever see her, to render all help needed, if we 
can". 

The two sat in the receiving area and waited for the P.A. to announce 
that the flight from New York had arrived. 

As they waited, they fail to see a woman staring at them with hate in 
her eyes.

The call for the flight's arrival comes and the women stand and moved 
toward the gate where the passengers will arrive. As they pass a set 
of vending machines, shots rang out.

They are both hit but not fatally, Shelly catching two rounds in her right leg and Mal gets one round in her left arm and another in the 
area of her left shoulder blade.

As she lay on the ground, Shelly looked in the direction of the 
shooting and saw a woman with a hand gun shoot a man, who it looked like, 
she had just knocked down. 

Shelly heard the woman scream "STINKING TERRAN, WHERE'S YOUR BRAVERY NOW?" and realized that she must be one of the Central Guard, and 
the man had seen the gun, grabbing it as she fired. 

There is screaming and then more shots but this time the assailant 
is the one to get hit, as the airport police take action but all 
Shelly and Mal can do is wait for emergency aid to arrive as 
officers make them as comfortable as possible 

Shelly sees that Mal has passed out and Police officers, having 
checked for her pulse and not finding it, have started CPR. After
two minutes they have a weak pulse and she's now breathing on her 
own  

Shelly asks an officer to please call Mrs Ross's apartment building 
and tell the people there what happened, she gives the phone number 
and their names. 

Then she gave a description of Cathy and Denise to the officer, 
and asked that they also be told what happened and which hospital 
to go to later, if no one arrives before the plane does. 

Medical aid arrives and they get the two up on stretchers on 
Electric carts, bandage the wounds as best they can and then take 
the women to a waiting ambulance. 

As the police check the dead women for I.D., they find that she had 
been wearing a wig, and she's bald under it, with a tattoo on her forehead.

At the apartment building, Lucy gets up to answer the phone "Hello?" 
she said "Yes this is the right number...WHAT?!?! WHEN!?! OK, I see, 
there will be someone there in about an hour, thank you very much". 

She hangs up the phone and turns look at the others, her face grim 
"Shildy and Mal have been shot, they are okay but on the way to 
Hailfax General. They were at the airport to pick up Catty and 
Denise, the police said the women who shot them was bald with a 
tattoo"

Eluza stated "Oh Mother, they've found us" her eyes bright with 
tears. 

Spea and Amy look especially shaken by this, after all, Shildy has 
been a very good friend to them. 

Lufy then says "I'm going to the airport to look at this woman and 
pick up Catty and Denise, any body want to tag along?". 

"Yes, I'm coming too, I might be able to identify her"
Eluza replied, then sourly "Not that it will matter much now".

Rabby and Patty looked at each other and nodded, then Rabby asked 
"Lufy, Patty and I will go straight to the Hospital. Someone needs 
to guard the equipment and the others". 

Spea stated "Amy and I will go with Rabby. Miti, will you stay 
here and do guard duty?"

Miti nodded, looking very sad "Should I pass out small arms, 
I mean, if the Guard can hit us at the airport, doing it here will 
really be easy, there are less people here"

Eluza, Rabby and Lufy glanced at each other and Lufy told Miti "Get 
Derek and yourself into the Bronz-x's and stand guard until we either 
call or one of us returns. Get everyone in the hanger, if they do attack,you can use the equipment to defend yourselves"

Eluza added "You DO know the Captains phone number in New York, 
right?" Miti nodded, then went out to the hanger to prep the Bronzs. 

Rabby stopped for a moment and then said "We'd better wait for Akira, 
he'll want to come", as Eluza and Lufy head out side to use 
Dereks car

On the way to the airport Lufy, who is driving, asked Eluza "Well, 
what do we do now?, it's obvious the Guard has found us and they 
wont stop till we're all dead". 

Eluza only shook her head and said "that's something for us all to 
determine but first we need to see just how bad Shildy and Mal are, 
did you get any info over the phone?". 

"Yeah, a little, the wounds apperntly aren't fatal, Shildy got hit in the leg twice and Mal took one to the body and one to her left arm" 
Lufy replied "The police also said a man was killed by the shooter, 
apparently because he interfered with her"

Eluza closed her eyes, muttering, "Mother, they really are all 
crazy".

Lufy snorted "No, really?, I always did think shaving 
your head was a very BAD idea". 

The rest of the trip is made in silence, both women worrying about 
their friends and thinking what might be done to safeguard them all 
against possible attacks in the future.

Meanwhile, Rabby, Patty, Spea, Amy and Akira rush to Halifax General 
to see just how bad their friends really were (though, in Akira's 
case, she was more then a friend). 

After they arrive at the Hospital and have determined where the two 
women are, they must wait outside the Emergency room until a Doctor 
can see them

As they are waiting, a RCMP Sergeant walks up "Well, hello again, 
I'm sorry about the other night, orders, the Captain wanted 
the matter solved ASAP. Now, I don't suppose you are here for a 
medical check-up?". 

Patty looked at him and almost draw back a fist to hit him with 
but turned away instead. Sarah then said "No, we're not, two of 
our friends were just shot out at the airport and we came to make 
sure they're okay. Although after being shot...".

The Sergeant nodded and said "I know how it feels, my old partner 
was shot a few times. I had to sit here a lot, it's not fun"

[Just then a Doctor came out of the E.R., wearing a long 
multi-colored scarf around his neck and a long coat with a brown hat. 
he went over to the bank of phone booths and, entering one, closed 
the door. the phone booth then vanished with a roaring sound]

Just then another Doctor (a real one this time) entered the hall and 
asked the Sergeant if he knew if there were any relatives or friends 
of the two gunshot victims about the Sergeant replied "I belive that 
these people will fit the bill, sir" indicating the small group 
beside him. 

The Doctor turned towards them and asked "Have you any idea just why 
the two women where shot?". Rachel replied "No, I'm sorry, we don't 
know but can you tell us how they are doing?". 

The Doctor replied "Well, the taller of them is in the best shape, 
she only needs to have the bullets removed I think, the other one, 
I'm afraid, will require surgery to remove the bullet from her left 
shoulder area."It's pretty close to her heart, the arm is not bad but 
the body wound, it's too early to know just yet".

Sarah reached out and took hold of Amy "There's nothing 
to do but wait, you know that". 

Akira asked "Is it possible to see the woman with the leg wounds 
yet?", then added "I was going to propose to her today". 

The Doctor looked at Akira and then at the sergeant "Well, I don't 
see any problem but you'll only have a few minutes, we need to get 
the bullets out ASAP" then he opened the door to the E.R. and 
followed Akira in. 

Inside the room Akira looked at Shelly's form as tears welled in 
his eyes, only seeing the injures, the blood and the I.V.'s, then he 
reaches out and took her hand in his as he kneeled by the bed and 
whispered "Shelly, how do you feel?". 

He heard a reply, with pain in the voice "A...Akira? who else is 
here? how's Mal?"

Akira placed a hand of her forehead and answered "Rachel, Patty, 
Amy and Sarah are outside. Mal's in bad shape; she needs surgery". 
then added "But that's not way I'm really here, I need to ask you 
something". 

Shelly turned her head slowly towards him "what is it Akira?". 

He then asked "will you marry me, Shildy?"

Shelly answered "Yes, I will, Akira", then squeezed his hand hard 
as she closed her eyes and moaned. 

"Is it bad?" 

"Better now that my friends are all here" she smiled painfully.

A minute later, a gurney carrying Mal exited the E.R. and went down 
the hall to the elevators with Rachel and Patty following. 

They asked the nurse if there was a way to monitor their friends 
progress while she was in the Operating Room, the nurse told them to 
get in the elevator, when they got to the right floor, the nurse said "Four doors down, on the right side,there is a waiting room" as she pointed to the left

When the two entered the waiting room, they saw that there was a 
phone on a small table, Rachel picked up the handset and called the 
apartments.

"Hello?, oh, Mrs Ross, is Miti free to come to the phone? oh, I see, 
well can you tell the others, if they call, that Mals in surgery right 
now and Shildy needs to have two bullets removed from her right leg?
yes, I'm worried about them too, thank you Mrs Ross, good-bye". 

As she put the handset back on the cradle she notices Patty crying softly.

She walked over to Patty and put her arms around her 
"Nothing we do or don't do will matter right now, you know". 
Patty looked up at Rabby's face, seeing that she too was crying, 
then they both sat and waited for word. 

Back downstairs Akira is asked to leave the room so that Shelly can be 
moved to another O.R., to have the bullets removed and the injures tended to. 

Sarah, Amy and Akira get the same treatment as Rachel and Patty did 
and they sit close together for company, knowing that all they can do 
is wait.

Out at the Airport, Eleanor and Lucy were having trouble getting the  
police to let them see the body of the would-be assassin. 

"Look" Lucy said, as she opened her wallet to show her Canadian Coast 
Guard I.D. "They're my friends, you already know that she shot them, 
then you guys shot her, all I want to do is look and see if I might 
be able to figure out why she did so".

The RCMP corporal looked nervous "I'm just not sure that I 
can let you see the body, it's not very pretty right now". 

Lucy snorted "It can't be any worse then pulling a body from the sea. 
I do that all the time. please?". 

The Corporal sees a Captain approaching and asked Lucy to wait a 
moment, so he can check with his superiors.

After a brief talk with the corporal, the Captain walked over to Lucy 
and Eleanor and said "You really want to look at the body?" the two 
women nodded and the Captain said "All right then, please come with 
me". 

He led them to a office where the body lay, covered with a sheet, he 
then turned back the sheet, exposing the body down to the navel.

Eleanor turned a little green and gasped. the woman's body had been 
blown open with four rather large holes, covering most of the torso 
and letting all see far more then they wanted to. Eleanor turned away, 
managing to keep her composure other then a slight green tint to her 
face. the Captain apologized and covered the body back to the neck. 

Lucy had been looking closely at the woman's face, trying to remember if 
she had seen it before or not, then gave up and said to the Captain
"Thank you very much, I don't know who she was, I might have seen her at 
the company where the two women work, I'm just not sure".

The Captain replied "That's quite alright, you did try to help in this 
matter, I think this will have to be called a random act of violence"

Eleanor spoke up "They were to meet a incoming flight, do you know if 
that plane has landed yet?".

"Yes, it did, about..." the Captain looked at his watch "...Five 
minutes ago, if you wish I can take you to the gate where the 
passengers will disembark."

Lucy said "Thank you, now we have to break this news to some friends, 
who the two victims were to meet".

The Captain looked concerned and asked "Are they likely to be very 
upset by this news?, I can have a nurse stand by, just in case"

"No, it should be alright, if you could make a private space so we 
can talk to the people, it will help" Eleanor said 

The Captain nodded "That can be easily arranged, I've had to have 
a few chats on the subject myself". As he said this, Lucy could see 
it in his eyes that he had done just that and the cost to his own
self-being had been high. 

Eleanor and Lucy followed the officer to the gate as the plane was 
just pulling up, he moved a rope line aside and told them "This area 
has been set aside for you and the people you're picking up, however 
you will only have about half an hour before another plane arrives to use this area"

Eleanor and Lucy thank the officer, he nods, then leaves them to an 
unwelcome task. "Eluza, do you want to do the talking?" Lucy asked as she kept an eye out for Cathy or Denise. "No, Lufy, this part of the reason I was a Ships Captain; to tell people things that they didn't want to hear"

Just then Cathy and Denise burst out of the crowd and Lucy waved to them, then started to move towards them, stopping when Eleanor's hand held her back "Eluza?, what?" she asked. 

Eleanor just pointed. Lucy looked in the direction that Eleanor wanted 
her too and saw a woman staring at Cathy with what might be madness in 
her eyes.

"Oh shit" Lucy breathed, then shook off Eleanor's hand and ran towards 
Cathy "The Central Guard, Cathy!!, Look out!!!" she barked in solnoid.

Cathy stopped in shock, hearing what Lucy said, then grabbing Denise,  
dropped to the floor as Lucy pulled her pistol from her fanny pack 
and pointed it towards the woman.

As Eleanor watched in horror, thinking that another friend might fall 
to the Guard, Lucy pulled the trigger once.

A small, round hole appeared in the front of the other's head as she fell with out a sound. Lucy wasn't taking any chances, keeping her 
gun trained on the body.

As the events sank in with the people all around them, Cathy and 
Denise stood and moved towards Eleanor quickly as the airport police appeared. 

Lucy hit the magazine release, letting it hit the floor and then racked 
the slide to eject the round, laying the pistol down and stepping back, 
keeping her hands in sight at all times. 

A Sergeant walked up to Lucy, asked her to turn around and lower her arms, as she did this the officer placed her in hand cuffs, "It's only until we determine just WHAT happenned here, and why" as she protested

Eleanor got Cathy and Denise settled, then walked over to the dead 
woman and saw a machine pistol next to the body, resembling an UZI 
(having seen pictures from Oskars training in the IDF). "Sergeant" 
she called out. "look at this please" 

He walked over "At what?" 

She pointed. he looked, then gasped upon seeing the weapon. "Well" he said "It seems that the 'cuffs aren't needed" as he walked back to 
Lucy and removed them.

Lucy thanked the officer, then approached the body. crouching down, 
she exmained the woman face "Nope, don't know this one either" she 
said, then noticing something, reaches out and shifts a wig from the head.

After staring for a moment the Sergeant said "Another bald woman?, 
must be a new trend in terror". 

Just then the Captain come onto the scene and said "I thought you 
were just meeting people, not playing detective"

Eleanor nodded and said "That WAS the plan but others had different plans 
to carry out. If it's okay with you, can we leave?". 

The Captain nodded "Yes, you can leave, it's plain that you were 
acting in the greater good here but we need a phone number where you 
can be contacted, if need be".

Eleanor gave the officer the number for the apartments as Lucy 
recovered her pistol and returned it to her pack.

The two solnoid walked back over to their friends. noting that 
Denise looked a little sick, Eleanor asked "Will you be all right?"

Denise nodded, not trusting her voice just then. Lucy said "We 
really need to leave now, we can talk in the car" as she held up a 
hand to stall Cathy from speaking. 

Denise gazed at her lover. "I just want to get out of here, okay?". 

Cathy nodded, thinking that if Shildy and Mal weren't here and that 
this is the second woman do die here today, waiting should provide 
answers.

After the baggage is collected, the group walk out to Derek's car, 
Lucy keeping a sharp eye out for anyone who might be watching them
TOO closely. 

When they are all in the car and moving away from the airport, Cathy 
breaks down and asks "OK, whats happened?, where are Shildy and Mal?". 

Eluza half turned in her seat, looked Cathy right in the eye and 
said "One of the Guard shot them about 90 minutes ago, they should 
both live but other then that we don't know".

Cathy can only stare at Eluza, then covers her face with her hands 
and wails. 

Denise slides over next to Cathy, puts an arm around her shoulders 
and strokes her hair. 

Eluza went on "Shildy had two fired into her right leg and Mal got 
one in her left arm and one to her body, about six inches below her 
left shoulder and needed prompt surgery to remove the bullets. 
Shildy also will need surgery but she is not as bad as Mal is". 

Cathy was openly sobbing now "Why?, why now?, I told her on the phone 
that I am now human. she sounded very happy! she shouldn't be in the 
hospital".

Lufy turned her head at this and said "What? you're human?? but...how? 
why??"

Cathy relates how Dawn had a gestation chamber aboard his Ship and 
that was how the paranoid had changed themselves into humans, adding 
"Catty 3534, the one from the first StarLeaf, had the idea to use the 
chamber to convert the androids to human so they could live again". 

Eluza stated "So, your now mortal? and can bear......oh I see why 
you wanted to do this Cathy" as she looked at Denise comforting Cathy.
