<sigh> Listen to all you folks complaining and making wisecracks
about the growing number of MSTs on the FFML...
Let me point out a couple of things.
1) You, as writers, know that above all else, it makes you feel good
when someone has something good to say about your story. These days,
most MSTs are positive reviews of very good fics, rather than slams
against really *bad* fics.
Let me ask you this: when you receive commentary on your fic, would
you rather get this:
"Good fic."
Or a nice, long, detailed commentary on exactly what someone liked
about the fic, and about things that could be improved? This is more
often than not what we try to accomplish when we MST fanfics.
2) We're not doing these reviews for our health, folks. We're doing
them because we liked the story enough that we felt like spending
some time writing a commentary about it. It takes *time* to do an
MST, folks. When I MSTed Lawson's "The Price of Heaven", it took me
two and a half *hours* to go through and interject my comments. I
didn't do it for popularity. I didn't do it to advertise my sense of
humor. I did it because I *loved the damn fic*. Plain and simple.
3) MSTing fics is *not* easy, and some fics, as good as they
are...just don't have anything in them that can be MSTed. It's a pity
when that happens, because we're limited in our reviewing options
then. Unfortunately, that's life.
4) MSTs of MSTs. IMHO, it's just (a) a form of agreement with the
MSTer, or (b) an attempt at a bit of levity for everyone to get a
chuckle out of. Let's face it...what would you rather see in your
mailbox: an MST of an MST, or a pile of spam ranting about fiancees?
Sorry to preach/bitch/whine/whatever like this, I just felt like
adding my five yen.
