Chapter One: Life and Death
Hanuko knew that her life stank, but she didn’t know that her death
stank as well. A month ago, she was a relatively miserable sixteen
year old living in this crazy world of ours. *School was one of her
biggest problems* Like anybody else her age, thoughts of dying never
manifested themselves in her head...
It appeared that she had to die that day. Fate took a look at her and
decided that it was her turn to go. What Fate did not understand was
why the girl was so lucky when it came to dying.
An explosion at the stove when she was cooking should have caused her
death, but it so happened that the stove ran out of gas and the girl
ate cold leftovers for breakfast. So much for that... A car that was
programmed to hit the girl had a different and more expert driver who
swerved and missed her by a hair’s breath. Must have been a glitch in
the program. It didn’t matter, the bicycle that she rode on would kill
her after school by crashing on the lamppost. However, Hanuko had a
flat tyre that day and she got a ride on her boyfriend’s motorcycle
instead. Fate turned purple in the face. He knew that it was unsightly
to curse, but he did it anyway, and decided that enough was enough...
Hanuko had never received flowers in her life. She was not exactly a
babe before she removed her braces and wore contacts, so no one gave
her any. This day however, she was elated by the fact by the dozen
roses that her boyfriend had given her. That was until Fate took a
stand and imposed on Hanuko a serious allergy that she never known she
had before. The dozen roses in her vase beside her bed caused her to
have breathing problems and she expired before the stroke of midnight,
just on schedule. Fate heaved a sigh of relief, wiped a drop of sweat
from his forehead and struck her name off his list.

“ Where am I ?! What the hell is going on here?!”
From the following comments, Intelligent Reader, you would have
understood that Hanuko wasn’t in the best of moods. Hanuko smoothed
her fringe from her face to take a better look at her surroundings.
All of a sudden, she realised that she could see right through her
arm, now wait a minute... WHAT?! She would have started screaming if
possible, but she could not really find her voice box anywhere and
realised that she could not make any sound apart from the smallest of
whispers. She stared in horror at herself.
Botan looked at Hanuko for a while before floating down on the paddle
to speak to her. She was quite worried. This girl looked as difficult
as Yusuke to handle at death.
“Hello, your name is Kageiki Hanuko, right?”, Botan asked in the
sweetest voice she could master. *not sweet enough by Koenma’s guide
standards though*
Hanuko startled at the voice. She could not believe her eyes, but
after what she saw what her eyes did to her body, she wasn’t sure she
believed what she saw anymore. An ethereal looking blue haired girl
was swooping down on a broomstick, wait, not a broomstick, make that a
paddle. Hanuko knew that witches existed, but weren’t they supposed to
be hideous? She could not understand the paddle business either.
*Actually, neither can I. ^_^*
“Who are you? And where am I?”, Hanuko demanded. She would have been
polite, but she did not think that politeness really mattered in a
place like this, and when you are not all there, there should be more
things on your mind than manners. Botan sighed, she knew that it was
going to be one of those days.
“I am Botan, your guide to Reikai in the afterlife. You are in Limbo,
and I haven’t the faintest idea where it is either, it is not on any
map. In case you haven’t realised, you are dead, and what you are
right now is a shadow of your formal self, or your soul.” Botan looked
at Hanuko right in the eye, and added a little disgustedly,“ Don’t
worry, you are not going mad, neither are you dreaming. Furthermore,
you couldn’t pinch yourself even if you tried.” Indeed, that was
exactly what Hanuko was trying to do.
“Why did you choose me? I am only sixteen, I haven’t even gone out of
school yet. I HAVEN’T ENJOYED LIFE YET!” Hanuko shouted, almost in
tears.
“ Look here dearie, I didn’t choose you, Koenma did, if you want
explanations, ask him for it, not me. I am just an underpayed
employee!”
“How am I to know where the hell he is?”
“Koenma is not in Hell, he is in Reikai. And Hell would be the
place you wind up in if you don’t watch your tongue young lady!” Botan
growled and looked at her Reikai watch. This assignment was already
eating into her private time. “Look, just get on behind me and I will
take you to him ok?”
Hanuko got on shakily, and whispered in a small voice, “ But I am
afraid of heights!” “Too bad then” were the only words that Botan
flung at her before starting up the engine of her paddle. * Reikai
engine, 4000 years guarantee. No petrol needed.*
-------------------------Halfway Point of Chapter 1
(unrevised)----------------------------------
Ok, stop your cursing, Kurama fans. Kurama and the rest of the gang
would appear later. Reikai and Hanuko plays an important role in this
fic and I have to dedicate a lot of words to them, otherwise it would
appear a little slipshod. Thank you for reading up to this point.
Remember to send me responses! Till next time, adios!
