Chapter 4: Ryoga of Hibiki
The days, like the miles, rolled into each other. As
the blur of the heat off the ground rise into the blue sky
distorting anything beyond in it's haze, Ryoga looks ahead
to the miles left to travel. News of war was just brought to
his attention, and he wanted to make sure he was there on
time. Sniffing the air, his eyes went wild. Reaching back
behind his yellow backpack, Ryoga grabbed the bamboo
umbrella that he always carried, and unfolding it above his
head he yelled back to his troops marching a little distance
behind him.
"HALT! Storm approaching...set up camp.....NOW!
The troops that composed his army, all wearing tiger
yellow and brown, started to drop their gear, and make little
tents in the sandy earth, A big, hulking, brutlike man came
forward and walked up to Ryoga. Standing next to him, the
brute rose over Ryoga by a good two feet. Ryoga was
completely in the mans shadow.
"Why are we stopping?" Ryoga looked slowly up,
past the huge, muscle formed chest, past the thick ox-like
neck, past the scarred face, and stopped right at the cold
steel eyes of Grug.
"We stop when I say we stop." Ryoga's words were
completely soft and calm.
"Over half these men are mine, and I cainut see why
you should command us, little man." Grug's tone was
obviously mocking. Ryoga seemed not to notice.
"I am the ruler. That is why I rule. No other reason
is needed, I think." Ryoga said as if talking to a child. "You
see the name ruler means just that, one who rules"
"In my lands, the strongest rule. Me and my men
have been following you because for some reason, a few of
them think you really are a king or something. The rest
follow because they think you know where some hidden
treasure is. One of those people is me. I want you to tell me
where exactly this treasure is before I go any further."
Grugs voice was devoid of emotion, and had much more
intelligence then his form suggested. Ryoga continued to
look into Grugs eyes for many moments before he finally
spoke.
"I never said anything about any treasure, Grug, but
you are right." A group of soldiers, obviously Grugs men
from their outraged expressions, begin to surround the two
figures.
"So there is treasure." Grug had a self-satisfying
look on his face.
"No" Ryoga's look was as cold as ever.
"No treasure," Grug starts to look around his troops,
and speaks up so that all around can hear him. "hear him, no
treasure. Well what are we going to do with this lying..."
Some of the men came forward.
"But he said you were right." The men all nodded
their agreement.
"Aye, you did say I was right, be this a joke then."
Greg started to look very red, and angry. Again Ryoga
waited for a few seconds before replying.
"I was not joking, I was saying that you were right
about the strongest ruling. It just makes sense."
"So, you giving your men to me in a hope to save
your own life," Grug looked amused, "I don't think I can let
you live." Grug's soldiers started to laugh along with Grug.
Grug looked back down to see the fear in the little mans
eyes and was shocked. There was no fear, only a deeper
amusement.. However, Ryoga was not laughing.
"Set up camp before it rains. I don't have time for
you right now, Grug, so please give your men
instruction...." Ryoga never got a chance to finish his
sentence as Grug with both of his meaty arms grabbed
Ryoga by the neck and rose him to eye-level. Sneering an
evil, toothy grin, Grug tensed his arms.
"So, should we take his head off his puny shoulders,
men!" The assorted soldiers gathered around the show of
Ryoga's demise laughing with their new leader.
"So.....that's how....it's going to.....have to be."
Ryoga barley made out as his windpipe was forced close.
"Yeah, 'fraid so weakling, we'll miss ya on the road
to fortune." The men started to sing a bawdy song about a
weakling king who got killed by an lowly stablehand, three
times his size.
"Well...........I"ll.......miss........you......GRUG!"
Ryoga screamed the name in blood red fury, rising both of
his arms from his side to Grugs wrists. A loud popping
sound along with a yell from Grug silences the men's song.
Ryoga, now semi lose, drops to the ground, only to spring
off his feet in the blink of an eye, burying his head into
Grugs exposed face. Grug recoils a couple of steps and
stands there stone still. His face was kind of dented by
Ryoga's head and only the small end of his severely broken
nose could be seen protruding from his face. With the sound
of a large tree falling onto the sand, Grug fell backwards
and lies still. Complete silence hovers the desert.
"Well we better make that camp before the rain
falls. Grug didn't say if you knew how to make a camp or
not. Since he is not available to show you, maybe you could
benefit from some of MY, shall we say, instruction." Needless
to say no one took up Ryoga's offer.
