Urgh.  That's not a small question there.

Some reasons I've seen:

1) Other projects come up and the fic goes on permanent hold. (Biles,
Lurker come to mind - especially Biles).

Well, when I bog down on one project, I start another one.  That's how I
got so many balls in the air at once.  Also, some stories flow much faster
than others for me.  This is why Furinkan Summer is only at #6 after 3
years...sigh.
