I am not sure exactly, but I think there are two reasons.  First of all to 
call her a tomboy is the same as saying that she is not feminine, and that is 
something that she is VERY sensitive about, not to mention the fact that Ranma 
has told her on more than one occasion that he was more feminine than her.
Also another thing to consider is that the way the character of Akane is 
portrayed,  she cares about Ranma weather she admits it or not.  It always 
hurts when someone you care about says something hateful, especially 
considering that he is her fianc�.

Why is tomboy such an insult to Akane? In my home town it is regarded
as a compliment at least if used to refer to an athletic ability
especially to someone Akane's age or younger. What does it mean in
Japan or perhaps I should ask what does the original in Japanese insult
mean?
