Life: Part 6
The four of us fly down the street. I hear it is the same path my
parents would take to school every morning. I look to the rusty fence
along the canal that my father was supposed to have traversed every day.
I have always wondered why the thing is so beat up looking. It's as if
entire battles were waged on the green banister.
"Hey, what's up?"
I turn to look at Michiru, who is pacing me easily. Lost in my
thoughts, I had lessened my pace. "Nothing, just reflecting." I glance
at the fence a last time, then look to the road ahead and speed up.
"Hey!" Comes the indignant cry from behind.
I grin and quicken even more, knowing Michiru can run like the
wind. Sure enough, she pulls up next to me with determination written
all over her face. I breath steadily, sighting the enterance to the
school. I flick my eyes to the left periodically, just to make sure my
sister isn't gaining. She is, ever so slightly, but I have faith that
I'll make it first.
Unfortunately, faith only works in religion and gambling,
sometimes. About two meters from the damn gate, I trip. I am moving at
a mighty fine clip. Now, I am flying at a mighty fine clip. And...
what goes up, must come down. I am no exception to that rule. I clench
my eyes shut as I pile into the ground, sliding about three excrutiating
meters across the school lawn. How do they cut this grass with so many
rocks in it? My pain induced train of thought crashes as I hear
laughter coming from behind me. A laugh that I know. A laugh that I
never want to hear. A laugh that belongs to Yorimoto Akira.
He's not a local roughian. He doesn't have a gang. He doesn't
break the law. He even gets excellent grades. He's a pillar of the
community. Who just happens to find me utterly repulsive for some
reason. No reason I can figure out, he just hates me. He's not bigger
than me, nor stronger, and not even more skilled. He just knows I won't
hurt him. I simply walk away, every time.
I just hope I don't hurt him too bad this time. I rise from the
ground, spitting out a bit of grass. This time, I am not in a forgiving
mood. This time I have a seriously bad headache that was almost gone,
and now is back. This time... well, this time is different.
I turn around slowly, mostly for effect. Akira takes one look at
me and bursts out laughing anew. Not exactly the effect I intended.
"You bastard! Why in the hell don't you leave him alone?!" This
is from Michiru, who has run over to my side. She looks at me
worriedly, "Are you allright, onii-chan?"
"Why don't you kiss it and make it better?" Akira asks with a
sneer. He grins in a very unpleasant manner. "You know you want to."
"Shut up, Akira." I find myself surprised at the growl that
accompanies my voice. "You had better stop, right there."
If Akira is surprised, he doesn't show it. A small crowd of people
has gathered around us. There's still fifteen mintues till the bell
rings, great time for a fight. Akira seems to think so too, because he
steps a bit closer to me and says, "You know you'd like it too, wouldn't
you?" He sneers, "Don't you just *love* your little sister?" The way
he said "love" makes my skin crawl.
My heart tightens in my chest. I don't think I've ever felt this
angry before in my entire life. I can feel all my muscles tense, making
my fists clench strongly. I try to control my breathing, meeting with
mixed success. "Akira... you are going too far."
He stares at me carefully. I think he's actually considering
backing off, not being used to such opposition from me. However,
whatever internal conflict that was raging inside him passed quickly,
and he made a decision. The wrong decision. Attacking me is one thing,
my family is another matter. "What, Nozomu?" He lowers his voice,
obviously not wanting to tarnish his reputation with what he is about to
say, "If you don't want her, I'll take her."
That's it... he's dead. I step forward, feeling Michiru grab onto
my arm behind me. However, before anything else can happen,
exclamations begin to raise from the surrounding crowd. I turn to see a
few people with glasses looking at them, most distraught.
"How the hell did that happen?" I look the other way to see a
friend of mine shaking his wrist and looking at his watch.
"What's up, Hiroshi?" I call to him, slowly relaxing. Though I
haven't forgotten about Akira, he still has to answer for what he's
said.
He looks at me, bemused. "My watch, man. It's broken. The glass
just cracked and fell right off all the sudden." He stared at it some
more, his brow furrowed.
"Look at my glasses!" Cried someone from behind me. I swivel to
find Michiru looking down at a pair of spectacles held by a short boy I
don't know. The lenses are gone.
The same phenomenon seems to have occured at the same time, all
throughout the group. Almost everything glass has cracked, and, in a
few cases, shattered. Murmers began to traverse the crowd. Some of
them were even looking at me, worry etched their features. I can tell
you, that scares me.
Hell, this whole damn thing is beginning to scare me. Everything
that's happened to me recently. Time freezing, Mianaiya, and now this.
What in the world is going on? Why is my life just now deciding to get
interesting? Or, am I just losing it? Perhaps this is all a dream? I
ask Michiru to pinch me. She looks at me strangely, but complies. It
hurt.
I'm still here. If I'm not crazy, I think I may cause myself to go
crazy. If, that is, I don't find out what is happening to me.
The bell rings, instantly causing everyone to panic. The group of
students, so caught up in what had occured, didn't pay attention to the
time. Not like I was either. Michiru grabs my hand and races for the
building. My arm is being ripped out of it's socket. I take a last
good stare at Akira, who is walking toward the enterance. He doesn't
need to hurry, the teacher will believe any excuse he comes up with. He
stares back at me, almost glaringly. One thing is unanimously decided
in this exchange. It's not over between us.
