Of course it began with a Mad Scientist.
This one was less mad than most of his ilk: He did not talk to himself; nor
did he laugh uncontrollably; his assistant, though retiring, was not a
monster that frightened little children and animals. In fact this somewhat
overweight, bald, bespectacled little man looked totally insignificant to the
unbiased observer.
He had no grandiose plans to rule the world. His dreams lay not in power or
revenge, but in seeking recognition for his unique talents. Even his laugh
was friendly, reassuring even. He had a retiring sense of humor, and could
speak eloquently on most any topic.
So, how did one know he was a Mad Scientist?
Well, it could be that he explored areas of research that were ignored by
his peers as being useless, even dangerous.
Or, it could be because his research was funded by a most eclectic group
with odd goals of its own.
It could even be that he worked closely with creatures that were inhuman to
say the least... And some of whom were downright dangerous.
Any of these might be sufficient to label him a Mad Scientist. Especially
since they were all true. But the one thing that truly set him into the
realm of the insane, twisted geniuses, was his complete ignorance of anything
approaching medical or research ethics.
And so we find him, in his laboratory, hidden from the work-a-day world,
toiling over his latest stroke of genius. His assistant, nervously watching,
and handing tools to his master, would from time to time wipe his red mop of
hair.
The Mad Scientist's voice was higher pitched than one might have expected.
"There! It is finished."
With a flourish he brandished an odd object: Colored white and mauve, it
appeared to be a pen. Albeit, one with a large decoration on one end. It
was larger than most pens, but still, it was of a size and shape that would
have no trouble being used by a young man, or woman.
The decoration on the end was a garish green. Shaped like a rounded
diamond, it appeared at first to have no significant relevance to anything.
The ruffle of green just below the diamond gave no clue either.
Looking on in satisfaction the Mad Scientist and his assistant looked at
each other in awe. "We did it. I didn't think we could, at first. But in
the end, we did it." His assistant, less thrilled than his master, merely
nodded. He knew intimately what the next step would be.
"Come now, we must test this and see that it works. I trust you are ready?"
The assistant demurred. He was not ready. He was not worthy of the honor
of being the first. He was terrified of the possible side effects.
"Now, now. There's no reason to be so nervous. It's perfectly safe. I
assure you. Have I ever let anything hurt you before?"
The assistant was speechless, not from the weight of the argument, but
rather from shock. He remembered his head being deflated, flying about the
lab uncontrollably, and numerous other disasters of like proportions. He
cautiously raised the least of these incidents to his master.
"Oh, pshaw and fiddlesticks. You know we can't advance science without a
few, small, insignificant risks. Besides I did manage to inflate your head a
few days later. Really, you have to stop bringing my failures to mind like
that. It can undermine my confidence. Now, you will try this out."
Aware that his last avenue of retreat had been cut off, but unsure how it
had happened, the assistant took the pen and held it aloft. He was about to
speak the activation phrase, when a knock on the laboratory door disturb them
both.
A young man, wearing glasses stuck his head into the room and yelled: "Dr.
Honeydew, Beaker! You're on in ten minutes!!"

Okay... this one should be coming out in the next week or two. Unlike my
other two crossovers, it's not a serial, but simply one crazy night at the
theatre. <grin> I thought I would toss this out and see what happens
though. If you think I may be forgetting your favorite Muppet, let me
know... I may have a part already plotted for him or her, but I may have
forgetten them.
See you again in a few days with this...
