I'll be producing more of this one hopefully later today, along with
another piece of ReGenesis.
Author's Notes: I scrapped my previous attempt at a BlueSeed fanfic,
"Spreading the Seeds". This is a completely new work, and will contain far
less crossover material than was originally intended. The timeline places
this sometime after Susa no ou's rebirth, but before his first growth
spurt.
BlueSeed property of Takada Yuzo, BS Project, Star Child, ADV Films, etc.
and is used without permission.
Other material used will be dealt with at the end.
BLUE SEED:
Rainbow of Souls
Chapter One
Fujimiya Momiji sighed as she stared out the window of her classroom. She
examined the treetops carefully, searching for any telltale trace of her
bizarre half-human protector...the man she'd completely fallen in love
with. As usual, nothing...he was just too skilled at concealing his
presence.
Momiji smiled. Still, she knew that most likely Kusanagi would be up
there, in the treetops, watching over her...
Her smile fell as she remembered that he might be out there looking for
her sister.
"Kusanagi-san," she sighed, "why do you still pine for Kaede?" Recently
Kunikida Kaede, Momiji's twin sister who had been adopted out of the family
at birth, had resurfaced, having been assumed dead after an incident
earlier in the year. Kaede had, apparently, been killed, but appearances
had been deceiving. Kaede had reappeared recently, and was apparently
working for the Aragami now.
Why? What caused this to happen? Momiji would like to spend hours trying
to figure it out.
That is, she would if it didn't make her head hurt.
With another sigh, Momiji continued to blithely ignore the sensei and
stare out the window.
At the headquarters of the Terrestrial Administration Center, commonly
known as the TAC, the usual morning activities were commencing.
That is to say, nearly everyone was shirking their paperwork from the last
mission.
The computer expert, Yaegashi Yoshiki, a short, plain sort with a round
face, unremarkable features, and round-rimmed glasses, was excitedly
playing a new hentai computer game he'd received.
The TAC's weapons expert and resident trigger-happy hothead, Sawaguchi
Koume, whose appearance, which could easily be described as "cute", belied
her aggressive, militaristic nature, was happily cleaning her two newest
acquisitions: the latest high-speed 9mm Uzi submachine gun, and a powerful
"rocket rifle", capable of firing the types of rockets the TAC often
employed against Aragami, yet lighter and less unweildy than standard
launchers.
Matsudaira Azusa, the tall, slender, elegant scientist, was working on her
reports, and analyzing the samples she had taken from the most recent
Aragami. Of course, that was the normal routine for her: her work made her
happy.
Takeuchi Ryouko, the classy, enigmatic woman whose appearance cried out
"secret agent" (especially considering that her hair always curtained half
of her face), was trying to focus her full attention on the report she was
filing, but her gaze kept wavering to a photograph of the boss which she
kept on the desk.
Said boss would be Kunikida Daitestsu. An older man, somewhere in his
forties, Kunikida was tall, broad, with a craggy, weathered face, accented
by a neatly trimmed beard, minus mustache, and a mole beneath his left eye.
At the moment he was concentrating intently on a crossword puzzle,
balancing a pencil on his finger, and sipping his coffee.
Takeuchi approached his desk. "Sir," she began, "I've completed my report
on the last Aragami incident. Would you like to read it now, or wait until
I can compile it with the reports from the rest of the TAC?"
Kunikida looked up for a moment, and stroked his chin thoughtfully. "I
think I'll wait for the compilation. Oh, and try to see to it that I get it
before lunch. I'd rather not go to lunch with a case of in*digest*ion."
Kunikida smiled at his horrible pun. Takeuchi, for her part, had
facefaulted onto the floor. Recovering her composure, she replied, "Of
course, boss. I'll get right on it." <Sometimes I wonder what I see in
him,> she thought to herself as she set about extracting reports from the
others.
Later that day, Momiji and Koume were on patrol. "So, Momiji, anything
yet?"
The fifteen year old, brown-haired girl sighed and shook her head.
"Nothing here. I don't get it. It's been too long since the last Aragami
attack. Something must be up."
Koume nodded grimly. "Yeah, I don't like it. I mean, with Susa no ou
around, those crazy plants are usually swarming."
Momiji nodded. Then, suddenly, she gasped. "Koume, pull over. Quick."
"Hmm? What is it?" Koume looked up, and saw what Momiji saw. She jerked
the jeep over to the side of the road, and jumped out. Momiji followed, and
quickly gained a lead on the munitions expert.
On the sidewalk lay Kusanagi Mamoru, Momiji's protector and non-official
member of the TAC. He was curled tightly into a ball on the ground, and was
groaning in pain. "KUSANAGI-SAN!!!" Momiji screamed. She knelt beside him,
reaching out to cradle him in her arms.
"Mo...mi...ji..." he groaned. "Something...terrible...wrong..."
"Hey, check out his seeds," Koume said. Momiji looked at what she was
talking about, and was shocked. Kusanagi was implanted with seven mitama,
the "souls" of the Aragami. All of his visible mitama were flashing,
strobing bizarre colors which shouldn't have been generated by the
mysterious blue seeds. Momiji looked down at her chest--her own mitama was
strobing with a miasma of colors.
"Is it an Aragami?" Koume asked.
Momiji shook her head. "I...I don't know what it is..."
The ground began to shake, and the street and sidewalk began to crack and
buckle. Momiji shrieked as a sinkhole opened up, swallowing the three of
them. Kusanagi managed to pull himself together long enough to catch the
two girls, and deliver them to a safe landing in the sewer system beneath
the street.
Koume's jeep crashed badly into the underground river. The armswoman
uttered several curses, and dashed to rescue her weapons and radio.
Suitably armed, she turned to appraise the situation.
Something enormous was writhing around in the sewage. It appeared to be a
giant, multicolored flower, with an opaque eye near the center, and a mouth
which was roaring as it flailed viny tendrils at the humans in the tunnel.
"Koume here," Koume shouted into her radio. "We've got Aragami on Hibya
Avenue. Get down here quick!" That said, she took aim with her Uzi and
sprayed hot lead at the thing's eye. It bellowed, and flailed a tendril at
her, sending her sprawling.
"Koume! Are you alright?" Momiji shouted.
Koume grunted, and picked herself up off the floor. "Don't just stand
there Momiji!" she shouted. She grabbed a semi-automatic from her belt
holster and tossed it to Momiji. The teenager barely managed to catch it,
then bore down on the Aragami. "Think before you shoot, idiot!" Kusanagi
yelled. "Find its seed! Its SEED!"
"Oh yeah," Momiji said. She closed her eyes and concentrated. Meanwhile,
Kusanagi gave an almost animalistic roar, and began to change. His catlike
eyes became even more so, and his canines became more pronounced. His
black, fingerless gloves shredded away from his hands, as veins pulsed and
muscles bulged in his wrists. His arms tightened, then swelled, and a pair
of wing-shaped blades, composed of living bone and flesh, erupted from his
forearms. A mass of tentacle-like protrusions erupted from his
shoulderblades, as his shirt ripped open to reveal the glowing blue seeds
on his chest. His shoes exploded, shredded by the force of his feet
becoming talons. With a defiant yell, he charged at the Aragami, blades
crossed in front of him, ready to skewer it.
Momiji, meanwhile, focused on the Aragami's soul. Her eyes snapped wide
open, and she screamed, "TOO MANY! IT HAS TOO MANY MITAMA!!!"
Koume looked at her. "Huh?"
Kusanagi finished his charge, severing one of the thing's petals. Rolling
into a crouch, he spun to face Momiji. "What did you say?"
Before Momiji could speak, the petal which Kusanagi had sliced off
dissolved into a mass of gray ash, and a bright purple bead tumbled out of
it, splashing into the river of muck and disappearing in the current.
Everyone did a double-take. "PURPLE!? What the HELL!?" Kusanagi shouted.
A rope descended into the sinkhole, and the rest of the TAC appeared.
Matsudaira snapped, "Yaegashi! Get cracking on that analysis!"
"I'm on it!" the computer genius replied, and set up his equipment,
readying the scan. Takeuchi moved into position beside Koume, and Kunikida
took in the situation from the sidelines, next to Momiji.
"Scanning..." Yaegashi said, then blinked. "Host organism is a new type of
hybrid poppy the city greenhouse has been working on. They're calling it a
nijigeshi. It's engineered to have multicolored petals."
"We can see that!" Koume yelled. "Now tell us something useful!"
"Okay, okay," Yaegashi said, then blinked. "Something's wrong here. I'm
reading...echoes...no, make that..." he frowned. "I don't know *what* I'm
reading! The scan doesn't make any sense!"
"Kunikida-san," Momiji said, "I can't get a lock on its mitama. It seems
to have a lot of them..."
"WHAT!?" the chief bellowed. "How can that be?"
"Yeah, I just sliced one of its petals off, and the thing had a damn
PURPLE SEED in it!" Kusanagi said.
Everyone blinked. "PURPLE seed?" Matsudaira asked incredulously. "That's
not possible!"
"Tell *it* that!" Kusanagi shouted. The Aragami began flailing at them
again. "WILL YOU CUT IT OUT?" Kusanagi yelled at it. "WE'RE TRYING TO
FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU ARE!" With that, he leapt at the creature again, and
slashed off a yellow petal.
Everyone jumped when the petal dissolved, and a yellow mitama bounced away
into the muck.
"YELLOW?" Kunikida wondered. "What the hell is going on here?"
Koume snarled. "Alright then, if this thing's gonna get weird on us, I'm
gonna get weird on it!" With that, she pulled out her new rocket launcher,
and loaded up. "Party time!" she shouted as she aimed at the center of the
creature and fired.
The rocket tore through the Aragami's central eye, and it ruptured. It
bellowed in agony, and from its mouth poured a stream of chlorophyll, and a
standard blue mitama. Kusanagi grabbed it, and crushed it. Immediately, the
poppy exploded into a dazzling array of multicolored petals.
Somehow, the TAC members weren't surpised when each petal produced an
oddly colored mitama before wilting.
"That was...bizarre," Takeuchi said.
The rainbow mitamas began scattering, most of them disappearing into the
muck. Kunikida recovered from the shock and yelled, "Quick! Capture some of
those mitamas before they all float away!" The team scrambled to gather the
strange seeds as they bounced towards the sewage. Momiji slipped and fell,
but managed to trap a green one in the process. Kusanagi came up with a red
one, a white one, and a purple one. Matsudaira caught a black one, while
Yaegashi and Koume each managed to nab orange ones. Takeuchi snagged what
at first glance appeared to be a normal blue mitama, only it was darker in
color, a deep indigo.
"Good work," Kunikida told the team. "We need to get these things back to
the lab and study them." Turning to the computer expert, he said,
"Yaegashi, any idea how many of these things got loose?"
Yaegashi scrambled back to his computer and ran the data through it. He
paled. "About three dozen, sir," he said.
The collective TAC groaned. This was going to be a hell of a long week.
