The unlucky number in Japan is 4.

Four has two pronunciations.  'Yon' and the older 'Shi'.  'Shi' (different
kan'ji, same sound) is also the root of 'death'.  Draw your own
conclusions as to why 4 is the unlucky number in Japanese culture...

I don't suppose it's a coincidence that in Maison Ikkoku, Yotsuya is the
one with the unlucky room number...
