Bear in mind that I've only seen the first twelve episodes of Evangelion
so far, so I don't know *everything* about Evangelion - but I've picked up
a fair amount of info from other people's writing.

As far as I'm aware, Ikari Gendo has two sizable marks against him -
maybe more:
1 - He's willingly up to his eyebrows in several different conspiracies
(which may or may not be working against each other), and
2 - There is little to no evidence that he cares at all about other
people, except insofar as how he can use them to serve his own purposes.

A prime example of the second charge is Ikari Shinji, Gendo's son - who
also happens to be the Third Child. After I forget how many years of
silence were supposed to have elapsed between Gendo and Shinji, the
now-14-year-old boy is summoned to NERV headquarters, taken into the
holding cage for Evangelion Unit 01, and told "You're going to be the
pilot." Gendo doesn't even seem to care about Shinji as a person, just a
tool to be used with the Evangelions.

The conspiracy charge is a little harder to demonstrate . . . at least,
with my limited knowledge of the series. So I'm going to leave that one
for somebody else to back up - or alternatively, to explain that I'm
wrong.
