In answer to Loki.  Although my email was in a humourous vein, I have, on
occasions, been flamed by people who are unable to read into ironic humour
(not meaning you, Loki).

Shin Seiki Evangelion
Great plot development until the plot runs into the scheduled season
conclusion.  And the alotted funds.  And the end of Anno's Prozac.  The
movies proved they would have never properly concluded the storyline in the
last two episodes anyway.

Nausicaa
Never liked this film much (must be the only person on the face of the
Earth who has fallen asleep during its run).  Surprising as I can usually
watch Miyazaki films and enjoy them.  But I find them brilliantly produced
mind candy (with the exclusion of Porco Rosso, of course).

Mononoke Hime
Haven't seen it yet, so I can't judge

Wings of Honneamise
Well-produced piece of nothing.  Just Anno philosophising about things
again, really.

Babylon 5
Proof positive that one shouldn't sacrifice the early seasons for
continuity.  By the time everyone realised the show was worth watching,
season 3 was almost over.

Anime and TV shows are just mediums for expressing something.  Yeah, it
doesn't have to have plot development (ChaCha's a great series despite a
lack of anything REMOTELY resembling a plot), but it doesn't mean it
WON'T. 

I never said ChaCha couldn't have some semblace of plot development, but I
used it as an example of a more interesting Maho Shojo series than
Sailormoon.  Sailormoon could have died after its relatively weak early
episodes.  It was merely lucky that the later episodes saw it brought back
for R, then S, then Super S and Stars....  The only place one is likely to
find a true attempt at plot and character development for a show such as
Sailormoon is within the sphere of the fanfic (or doujinshi, for that
matter).  Unfortunately, the tv producers were surprisingly less than
enthusiastic about attempting such a feat.

You cannot make a blanket statement about a given media... too many times
I've heard things like 'a video game can't have a plot' (I can point to a
couple RPGs which have quite good ones, and even a few action games).
Even heard 'fanfics can't have plot development'.

You obviously haven't seen too many Australian soaps like "Neighbours",
"Home and Away", "Paradise Beach", "Water Rats", "Blue Heelers" and
"Pacific Drive" then.  This is called the "Australian Television Industry",
and a scary thing to behold it is too.

Just because one thing in a category may not have a plot doesn't mean
everything in that category won't.  Judge things in a category on their
own merits... otherwise you'll end up judging 'Babylon 5' on the basis of,
say, 'Baywatch'. 

Might have helped Bab5's ratings had they had a few more norks on screen,
though.  ^_^

Sorry, I've just heard statements saying 'All <category x> have <trait y>'
a few too many times.  Even here on the FFML: 'No Ranma fanfic has any
depth', 'No Sailor Moon fanfic has character development', 'No Evangelion
fanfic makes any sense'.  (Ok, I actually heard the last comment on a
DIFFERENT list, but...)  While we -do- have a bit of an overflow of Ranma
and Sailor Moon fanfiction... those statements do -not- always apply.  I'd
argue that Zen's _Bitter End_ had depth, and I'm sure there's Sailor Moon
fanfiction that has character development... John Biles and Jeff Hosmer's
_Sailor Moon Z_ is probably a good candidate - I wouldn't know, I don't
really read Sailor Moon fanfiction.

Ranma fics have some depth....  50% of the time.  Sailormoon fics have
character development.... 50% of the time.  Evangelion fics make sense....
0% of the time, unless its a spoof, then it still doesn't make any sense
but at least its funny....

My opinion of television today is not particularly high.  And that includes
anime, usually because of the large amount I've seen now.  I've learnt to
become rather choosy about what I watch and what I don't.  Five years ago,
I would have jumped at getting my hands on a copy of Sailormoon.  Today,
though...  After series like Eva and Esca and FY and RuKen and so on....
And even they have their moments of padding.  Oh well.

Anyway, Mark phrased his reply perfectly right at a time I needed to
rant... again, nothing personal, Mark. ^_^;

That's alright.  ^_^  I'll only hold it against you for the rest of my life
and yours, whichever comes first.  ^_^  *insert mildy disturbing maniacal
