Actually, the way I play it in my fanfics is that Sylia and Priss are two
sides of the same coin. Sylia even (in her own thoughts) refers to Priss
as her other self, but dosen't want to know if Priss is either her lighter
or darker self. It's something I leave open for interpratation, since I
don't know which is the lighter or darker of the two. Sometimes I think
Priss is darker, but then I think of Sylia's whole motive and switch.
I will say this, though. IMO, if it weren't for Sylia, Priss would be dead.
Priss and Sylia are a _lot_ alike, revenge aspect aside. The only
difference is their approach. Priss goes in, all guns blazing. Shoot
first, kill 'em all, and let God sort 'em out afterwards (in combat and
even her personal life). Sylia, OTHO, calculates her move first (sometimes
to a fault). This is perfectly illustrated by the Survival Shot sequence
in ep 4. Priss and Linna go in with guns blazing and get Nene out of the
way fairly early, while Sylia sits back, plants that mine, and uses her
reflection in a mirror as a decoy. Sylia "takes out" her two opponents
pretty much single-handedly (Nene is still mostly useless in hand-to-hand
combat at that point) without even firing a shot.
Nene is the Knight Errantry part of the Knight Sabers (hmmmm ther's an
idea for a title) She see's them as saviours not mercinaries and the
and the police as failures (although she still has enough faith to still
be IN the police.)
I don't think that Nene thinks the ADP are _complete_ failures. She says
she's sick of the ADP _looking_ like idiots (paraphrasing, of course), but
never says they actually _are_ idiots. Take ep 7, for example. If she
really thought that the ADP were complete failures, would she immediatly
have run to Leon with the info about Vision, a case the KS were working
simultaneously? I doubt it. Dispite her cuteness, Nene's not a dunce, and
I'm sure she realizes that the political red tape is what keeps the ADP
from doing their job and makes the KS, as the saviors she feels they are,
necessary. Nene is perhaps the only one with a _real_ long-term vision of
the KS. Sylia's speech in ep 8 almost sounds like something Nene would
say, if you inserted giggles here and there. I doubt Priss has any
long-term goals in mind beyond "kill 'em all and die in the process."
Linna, like you say later in the post, has that little "what's in it for
me" in the back of her mind. Sylia is the hardest to read. It does seem
like revenge is the only motivator until we get to episode 8. The question
is, what changed that if it _wasn't_ her original goal?

Anyway, Sylia was what 11 ? 12 ? when she "grew up" Nene didn't have to
face any of that. She, Priss and Linna might be able to help Sylia to "cut
loose" but the (not so )simple act of REALLY letting go might cause a
breakdown. -Or at least be the beginning of a long slow healing.
Agreeed here. This brings it back to the Sylia/Batman parallels. I think
Sylia's wound herself up _way_ too tightly and is constantly walking that
"Batman" (Michael Keaton version) fine line.
Mackie : about some things yes, but he's still her "little" brother.
I've always seen Mackie as a sort of "Alfred" type. Alfred was around when
Dr. Wayne was murdered, and Mackie was there when Dr. Stingray was killed.
While Mackie was perhaps too young to _really_ grasp what was happening
(given Dr. S's workaholic tendancies, gathered from ep 1, Mackie probably
didn't even really know him. Even back then Sylia was his de-facto
parent), and was therefore blessed with a more stable personality than his
sister (leacherous tendancies aside, I'd challenge _any_ guy reading this
to _not_ try to peep at four georgous naked women when _they_ were
sixteen). Alfred was already an adult, so his personality was already
formed, and stable.
