There are various services which will subscribe to mailing lists from what
appear to be valid accounts - they seem to act as 'lurkers' (never
posting, only reading), but in actuality will grab addresses from a
mailing list, to be used for bulk-mailers.

HOWEVER.

I suspect this is not happening to the FFML, since other frequent posters
(such as myself) aren't getting these same solicitations.  Posts to Usenet

I believe that you are correct. I have been recieving a flurry of these
stupid things recently, and I spent several weeks offline after my OS
exploded (the dread virus known as Windows 95) and have been in lurker
mode for some time due to my life exploding. Odds are that these
operations are simply being hyperactive in their address  acquisition
and spamming and so there is just a general rash of this sh... errr, I
mean stuff.

Soeey to spam on my first post in forever, I just didn't want to see the
list grow paranoid with some big conspiracy theory!
