"I knew love once," I mumble as I stare outside my window. The
weather outside is bleak, cold, just like my mood.
My roomate, Kazuya is with his new girlfriend again, not knowing
that each laugh, each special look that they shared, reminded me of
what I have lost...
It all began on spring break. I had gone home to help with the
family inn as usual. I dreaded it, knowing that I would be spending
my whole time inside to avoid the cruel remarks.
You see, I look like a girl. I even sound and dress like one.
I guess I'm what some would consider a freak, something the local
boys would never let me forget it.
I was at the front desk, reisgned on spending another boring
vacation when the front bell rang, indicating that customers were
coming in.
When I looked up, I was face to face with a group of giggling
girls. They all seemed so happy, I envied them.
They were all signing names when I noticed her. She was
standing in the middle of the group, strangely detached as she looked
around the room with eyes that made her look like she was going to
burst into tears.
I felt sorry for her, so I offered her a smile. "Hello."
With that one word, her expression lightened and our friendship
blossomed. We were inseparable for the next two weeks. We spent our
mornings window shopping at the small shops in town and we devoted
our nights into walking along the cool ocean water.
If anyone had made fun of me during that time, I didn't notice.
Every move I made was with her and I was happy.
It was on our last night together that I had the urge to tell
her how I felt. Sometime during the course of those two weeks, I had
fallen in love with this sweet girl that never smiled.
We were walking on the beach as usual, the cool water beneath our
toes was refreshing in the humid spring night.
"There's something I need to tell you," I said hesitantly,
unsure on how I should proceed.
"Yes?"
"I think I..." I swallowed nervously and looked up. It was the
worst thing I could have done. One look at her watery green eyes and I
lost myself in its depth. "...Nothing. Forget it."
She nodded her head understandingly and shivered a bit as the
wind suddenly became cold, goosebumps forming all over her arm. "I'd
better go or we're going to miss the train."
I nod my head and almost jumped out of my skin when she kissed me
on the cheek.
"Shun, thank you...for everything," she whispered before she
left.
I watched her retreating form, my mind in turmoil because there
were so many things between us left unsaid. What did she mean by
'thank you'? Was she thanking me for being a friend...or something
more?
As I absently stare at the rain falling outside my window, I
can't help but wonder what would have happened if I had found the
nerve to tell her what I felt.
Would she have run off in tears? I don't think I can handle her
rejection...but is it better than not knowing? Would I still love her,
knowing that her heart wasn't mine?
I'm not sure.
Then again, maybe she would have given me a smile and said, "I
love you, too."
