Well, not to sound cynical here, but an artist's life is
usually a life of frustrations and chaos. Many artists
must draw on a perpetual source of conflict in order
to create the art that they and other people love.

A writer is a kind of artist who does not create simple
works of art, but complex worlds of thought. Perhaps
it is this Chris Hill's messed-up life which creates the
drive, motivation and skill required to write his/her
fics.
