I agree.  Whatever you do, don't ever tell a person to flat out 'stop
writing.'  Even if you have good reason to do so, you may be 'nipping them
at the bud,' so to speak.  If, back in third or fourth grade, when I wrote
my first written story, someone had made comments like this towards me, I
would never have continued writing.

He may have talent that simply hasn't emerged yet.  Give it time, Robert,
