It'd be like someone sending Caroline Seawright (sorry for using you for
the example, Kun-chan, but you also posted in this conversation) a note
that "[Ranma character x] would never do something that hentai!  You
pervert!  How could you violate the vision of the most Holy
Takahashi-sama?  etc..." - does Kun-chan get any useful feedback from that
note?  Not really.    

Heh, actually, I'd get the feedback that this person wouldn't know what
love was, nor would that person know how to have a child, and that that
person still probably thinks that babies come from cabbage patches or
are delivered by storks! ^_~  (Ie. I'd get the message that they are
totally stupid, or a child. ^_^ )

Then I'd have to tell them a little story about the birds and the bees
and how that people in love do do that kind of thing, especially if
they are married, and how it's not sinful or bad, and that it's not
against (most) religions, and patpat them on the head and tell them
to go talk to their mummy and daddy about love and marriage and babies
and how they all fit together!

Sorry to be so blunt and negative ^_^... but wrong. At the very *least*, 
you get the message that this reader disagrees with your charactization 
of the character. If most of the comments are like that (as the original 
poster seemed to suggest), then I'd say it's a message that you need to 
take another look at how you portrayed that character. I may be going 
against the majority, here... but I believe a writer's purpose is to 
*communicate*. You can enjoy writing just for yourself, and take pleasure 
in having written something you enjoyed. But if you can't share that 
enjoyment with someone else -- can't invoke those feelings in another 
person -- then you're missing something as a writer. And if most people 
can't accept or share in your take on a character, then you're having a 
problem communicating.

Thankfully I share that enjoyment with most people. ^_^  The ones who
hated them never said ... (except for that Gaijin in Nerima one, which
I was expecting anyway! *grin*) So, I can assume that everyone loved
it, except for the people who were too repressed to actually read the
fanfics!

Maybe canonically the character wouldn't do something
like that.  But Kunoichi chose to make 'em do so for the point of one of
her numerous lemon fics. And if all she gets - or the majority of it -
are comments like that, she'd probably be rather annoyed.  If she were an
author new to the scene, she might even feel that it wasn't worth posting
her fic.

Luckily my original audience loved the 'fic ... (Yep, an audience of one).
But then, so did the editors ... who passed on the message about it... and
so others asked to read it ... then I asked others if they wanted to read
it ... then I put it on raas (it was that, back then!), and got lots of
happy people writing nice notes about it ... and so I did a second one!

But, hey ... I still only write for that guy ... just count yourselves
lucky that I have to make it as perfect as I can to satisfy myself that
I will not be sending him a pile of junk ... or else you'd get nothing
at all! ^_^
