Okay, I've gotten enough negative feedback from this ML to last the
rest of
my life. I know I asked for it, well, now I got it. It seems my

<snip>

rec.arts.anime.creative, or the Slayers ML. I'm sick of hearing
about poor
Ranma, and if you have a problem with the way I treat Ranma in my
fic, get
used to it. I think he's a jerk, and I'm not backing down.
<scowls> Now this is what I hate to see.

Everyone....I'll go to bat for Christina-san here. "Oh, Ranma's god,
he's not a jerk, Akane and Ranma forever, yadda yadda, freun leiven"..
. GET OFF IT.

You have to accept the fact that there are *some* people who *do*
*not* *see* *it* *your* *way*.

<snip>

For some reason, I don't see the big deal here.

If she wants to write OOC characters, she should expect comments to
that effect - if she writes Ranma OOC, then of course she will get
people telling her that her Ranma is OOC.

If ANYONE writes a character OOC, they get comments on it (or, as
she put it, 'winging'.)

Maybe she likes her version of Ranma ... But if she wants people to
stop telling her that Ranma is OOC, then shouldn't she have a little
note or something, on her fanfic, saying that it's an elseworlds
'fic, and that in her version, Ranma IS a bastard or whatever?

There's no point in throwing a tantrum, if this was not done.

I don't really care about this "accept the fact that there are *some*
people who *do* *not* *see* *it* *your* *way*" business...

If someone is writing about a character, they SHOULD write that
character as IC as they can make them! Their personal opinion of
that character _should not matter_!

If they want to write their OWN version of that character, why not
make SURE that people know that it is not meant to be the "real"
character, but an elseworld character?

I'm sure that if that was made _CLEAR_ in the author's notes, or at
the start of the 'fic ... she would not get people telling her that
her Ranma is OOC.

I haven't read Slayers 1/2. In fact, I haven't read any fanfic in
ages, because I've found myself to be too busy to read even the
fanfics that people send to be personally. But I can't believe that
someone would throw a tantrum over this!

Sure, she may hate all the critisism (the second C in 'C&C'!), but
there are _easy_ ways to get around it! If she wants to write her
Ranma in that way... she just needs to point out that it's an
elseworld Ranma! (Some people can't think this for themselves ...
it NEEDS to be pointed out to them, out of the story.)

But if she has the stance that her Ranma is the IC Ranma found in
Ranma 1/2 ... then she will have to expect people telling her that
she is wrong.

In fanfics, it is NO LONGER ABOUT PERSONAL BELIEFS!

You can sit and hate a character all you want, but when you write
a fanfic, you can NOT transfer all your hatred onto that character
without expecting the character to change!

I hate Shampoo. But when I write, I try to keep her as close to IC
as possible ... though in the stories, she always gets the bad end
of the deal (though it could be much worse *evil grin*). But I do
not go out of my way to portray Shampoo as a bimboish, slutty whore.
If I did that, which is the way I see Shampoo, people would tell me
that Shampoo was OOC, and 'winge' and send me death threats for
doing it.

But if I make it known, in the notes before or after the story, that
the story is an elseworlds story, and that it doesn't have the
characters as seen in Ranma 1/2 in them, but my own version of them,
then people take it in good grace (or just ignore it).

In the 'fic 'Gaijin in Nerima', no-one went around telling me that
everyone was OOC, and that I should die because I made Shampoo have
sex with a tom cat and have kittens!

But, anyway... I'm sorry to say it, but I believe that it's the
author's responsibility to make SURE that the readers know that the
characters will not be IC in their story if they want to write their
own version of the characters.

If they do not do this, then they are to expect complaints.

But under no circumstances should they throw tantrums and tell
others that they are 'winging' and so forth, and tell them that
they are 'sick of it', UNLESS IT IS POINTED OUT, IN THE STORY
ITSELF, THAT THIS IS AN ELSEWORLDS STORY! (Yes, it may give people
a hint by saying 'Slayers 1/2', but MOST people would still expect
to have Slayers and Ranma 1/2 characters _IC_ in the story... this
does NOT show that it is an elseworlds 'fic.)

If, on the OTHER hand, it IS pointed out to the readers, and it is
made clear _in the actual 'fics somewhere, NOT in other posts to
the FFML_, then yes, she DOES have a right to get angry and throw
a tantrum at the readers.

But, I am sorry - this has NOTHING to do with someone's personal
beliefs. This is FANFICTION, _not_ someone expressing their personal
opinion!

But, well ... if she believes that her Ranma is totally IC, and a
whole lot of people (seems like almost everyone is telling her that
Ranma is OOC, by what I saw of her e-mail to the ML) disagree ...
Then I think that _someone_ needs to review their Ranma 1/2 ... I
can't say who that someone is, because I haven't read the 'fics,
but ... from all the people complaining to her ... I'd say that it's
more likely that Ranma _IS_ OOC in Slayers 1/2.

If she doesn't want to change how she writes Ranma - fine. Just
make a note to that effect at the start or end.

If she wants to change her Ranma to be more IC - she shouldn't be
yelling at the ML and insulting people who read her 'fics... she
should just write Ranma more ICly.

She can leave or she can stay... But where-ever she posts it, this
type of reaction from Ranma fans is likely to pop up again. Leaving
is NOT a way to fix it ... Changing her Ranma or writing a note to
the readers IS a way to fix it.

She should concentrate on fixing it, not just doing a 'quick fix'
like leaving will be.
