Firstly, a few questions:

1. What types of trees are most common in Japan and China

the green ones ;) (honestly, i don't remember, and couldn't tell you what
type they were if i did =)

2. Do Japanese department stores follow a set structure (i.e. are certain
types of goods always on a certain floor)? If so, which products are on
which floors?

most department stores have food type stuff in the basement. a bread shop,
candy, fish, sushi, whatever.

beyond that i'm not sure if they're all alike. the department store near
where i was staying was only three stories (including basement.) bottom
was food as stated, the ground story was kind of expensive stuff. fancy
clothes, perfume, stuff like that. the top story had random shops selling
all the things aimed at teens and other who can't (or don't want to) waste
all their money on the expensive stuff. clothing stores, book stores (with
lots of manga of course =) toy stores, all those things that don't fall
under food or expensive fancy stuff =)
