Personally, were I to make a choice, it would be Benares' "Stepping
Stones".  "Putting Your Heart in the Right Place" is close, and 
perhaps more influential to fanficdom overall, but I've never seen 
nearly as many people talk about it, ask questions about it, and want 
to know about it as "Stepping Stones".  Also, it's always been 
regarded as well-written, and it's just damn hard to find someone who 
doesn't like it!  ^_^  It was one of the first fanfics I read and
was pointed to, and one of the very few I read that I can clearly
remember and still like.  In my opinion...
