Sorry to rain on your parade, Spiffy. ...and please understand that I'm not
singling you out when I say this...

Getting people to read stories is helped a whole helluva lot by spelling all
the words correctly and using the correct words in the right places and
using punctuation right and maintaining proper verb tenses and avoiding
common usage errors and.... on and on and on.  All that boring stuff they
tried to teach us in English class.  A close look at the stories that _do_
get read and responded to, a lot, on this list will; almost without
exception, reveal that all these things are true about them.

I definitely agree with ya there. But how about good opening paragraphs? I
always thought a good opening that works pretty well will catch the readers
attention, which'll make 'em wanna read more...
