I like this setup for the story.  I do have a few observations, though.

1)  From reading the Belgariad and the Mallorean, as well as the Ellenium
and the Domes of Fire, I think that Polgara is definitely the better cook.
In fact, she is supposed to be one of the best (not the necessarily best
since Beltira and Belkira, who taught her, are still around).

2)  I am certain Sephrenia has above average eknowledge in herblore but
that wasn't really shown much of in either the Ellenium nor the Dones of
Fire.  Polgara, though, has considerable skills in herblore.

3)  Polgara has shown no sword skills.  She hangs back and "blows people
away", if necessary, while having someone, like Barak, defend her person.
It might be better to include another person to handle Parn's sword
training.  Maybe Belgarion?  He is the only person that is a long liver 
and has considerable sword play knowledge.  He might ride into 'camp'
after Parn reaches them, for example.

4)  I don't think Polgara is so harsh.  I think you did a good job at
showing her strength of character and determination but she did come off
as being a little to harsh with Parn.

I didn't mean to bash Sephrenia or anything, but she does seem to come a
little short compared to Polgara.
