Eight year old Rin Kobayashi smiled as he took in his
surroundings. His next door neighbor, Alice Sakaguchi had taken him
to the beach just like she had promised.
He smiled up at her, the only woman he could ever love. Though
they had an age difference of nine years, he knew that she was the
only one for him.
"Why don't we place our things there," she suggested as she
pointed to a spot a couple of feet away from the ocean.
He nodded his head in agreement and quickly ran towards the spot
before it could be taken by someone else.
"I see you've fully awakened, Mokuren," he said casually after
she caught up with him and sat down.
She looked up at him, surprised."H-how did you know?"
"Did you really think trying to hide the mark of Sargelem with
a hat would keep me from finding out?"
She laughed. "I guess not...You know, I know another little
secret."
"And what's that?"
"Well..."
"C'mon! Tell me, Alice. Please."
"I dreamt that you were really Shion." Her happy demeanor
immediately changed into a somber one. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"I...I didn't want to see you hurt. I mean, I though that
finding out that the man you loved was a child would break your heart."
"Rin..." Whatever she was going to say next was cut off when he
kissed her on the lips.
Alice's eyes widened in surprise as she felt his warm lips against
hers, too shocked to do anything else.
Rin noticed the lack of response and quickly ended the intimate
show of affection. He felt like his heart was being torn from his chest
as she refused to look into his eyes.
The uncomfortable silence that followed was broken when he spoke,
his voice, no louder than the gentle waves caressing their toes. "I
guess you don't love me anymore."
"That's not true."
His head was bowed down, but Alice could tell that he was crying.
"Don't worry. I understand."
He undestood perfectly that she could never be his again, but
after all he went through to be with her again...he wasn't sure he could
let her go.
Alice took one look at him and wanted to tell him that he was wrong,
that their age difference didn't matter...but it did. Things have changed.
They weren't the same people anymore.
She wasn't sure if the feelings she felt for him on this life was
love or just sympathy.
"Alice?" Rin asked, snapping her out of her reverie. He looked
determined and scared at the same time, making Alice wonder just what
he was going to ask of her.
"Yes?"
"Promise me something."
"Anything."
"Promise that you'd wait for me."
She looked straight into his eyes and knew that she could only
have one answer. She realized in an instant that nothing has changed.
Inside, he was still the same man she had fallen in love with at the
moon...and still do.
"Of course."
