Circumstantial evidence - Ranma can do the class work, even if badly - 
tends to support the idea that his reading and writing is adequate.

In the anime there was an episode where Ranma's handwriting was shown to 
be awful, however there was no suggestion that he didn't know his kanji 
characters, just that the way he wrote them was almost illegible.

	In the anime "Faster, Kasumi, Kill, Kill", Ranma tries to write a 
kanji to contain the demon, but misses a stroke.  The spell is 
ineffective.  Says something about his kanje, doesn't it? ^_^	

I don't think that's a fair comparison since spirit wards are 
supposed to be fairly hard to draw.
