Subject: [Spam] What ARE fanfics for, anyway? Re: [FFML] [Spam] What makes Ranma popular with a certain set of writers?

People who like Ryoga hate Ranma? People who like Akane hate Ukyo?

Hmm.

Somehow, I don't seem to see it that way.

I mean, I cheer for Ryoga, but I like Ranma. I like Akane, but I like Ukyo,
Shampoo and Kodachi (yes, Kodachi) too! I want Mousse to get Shampoo, and
yet I also want Shampoo to get Ranma, Ranma to get Akane, etc., etc...

And no, I wouldn't want someone to just kill Azusa and get it over with,
although it's tempting sometimes... 'cause I kinda like Azusa, too.

Fanfics are there to play 'what if' with the set reality, but the set
reality is still there.

Sorta like X-files. (I digress, so nobody comment on this example. I'm just
making as succint an illustration as possible.) I kinda want Mulder to end
up with Scully, but if that ever happened on the show, it'd ruin it
completely. Enter fanfic. It's kinda nice to read those, especially when you
think that it'd porbably never happen on the show. (Back to the topic at hand.)

Same with Ranma, Tenchi, A!MG, Eva, what have you. Fanfics are for 'what
if's'. They're sometimes even used for 'wish fulfillment'. Hi, otaku-fic
writers. So what if someone's OOC. Granted, it's annoying, sometimes,
especially if you see Nabiki or Ayanami fawning over this new guy who
appears who can kick Ranma's butt at kempo or has 100% synch with his
EVA-13. But, like I said, they're there for what if's. Why do you think we
put disclaimers on our fics? Because we are tampering with realities that we
don't own in the first place.

We should all stop ranting and wasting bandwidth (and server capacity) about
name spelling and canon and OOC and 'Ranma's Best Babe' (whoa, my age is
showing) and start seeing these fics for what they're for.

To tell a story.
