Well, they didn't really find love interests in MKR1 anyway. Umi got
into a bit of a triangle (it was Umi that had the triangle wasn't it?
Help me out here Zephyr!) in MKR2, and Hikaru sort of found a love
interest in MKR2 also.

Remember Ascot, the little boy that's Cephiro's current Bal (Summoner)?
By the time MKR2 begins, he grows. He *REALLY* grows. He becomes taller
than Zagato even. However, the reason why he grew up so much is that he
wanted to impress Umi, because he had a crush on her ever since she
fought him for the last time. OTOH, Umi and Clef (in the anime) have a
somewhat "silent" relationship; at the end of the series, before the
girls are whisked away to Earth, she says, "Clef... I... No, it's
nothing..." but it's pretty obvious what she would have said.
Unfortunately for Ascot, Umi never even realizes he loves her (she's
Akane to Ascot's Ryouga.)

[EVEN BIGGER SPOILER!!!!!]

Hikaru is a different matter. She falls in love with Zagato's younger
brother (and more formidable swordsman/wizard) Lantis, who vaguely looks
like an older and rougher version of SM's Mamoru Chiba. Also, she seems
to start feeling a strong affection towards a commanding officer from
another planet, Autozam, whose name is Eagle Vision (platinum-blond
hair, golden eyes, wears a pale yellow "cloak" and green robes.) In the
manga, she says she wants to "marry" (ie be forever with) both Lantis
and Eagle (a subject often discussed in the Rayearth ML) but in the
anime one of them dies, leaving her with an easier choice ^_^;;;

Indeed. But just for the hell of it, I'll explain it here: In Cephiro,
 will is the dominate force above all else. The Will literally drives
Cephiro. It's the Will of the Pillar that holds the world together,
and the Will of the people that determines how prosperous and
beautiful the land is.

Right on the spot. Also, sometimes the Heart is similar (in MKR's
universe) to Will. If you have a powerful Will but a dark Heart, you
would create a dark but mighty kindgom. Example: Debonair, from MKR2
anime.
