Okay, all of you in anime fandom, calm down.  And yes, I do mean YOU (watches
as the audience puts down their automatic weapons, particle cannons, and pea
shooters.)

First of all, Dave Berry is a columnist and humorist (emphasis on humor, and
only slightly.)  His job is to be outrageous, to get people to think and
laugh.  Unfortunately, some of you out there just DON'T GET THE JOKE! [ahem,
sorry about that.]  (Sees that the audience got new hairdos, the blownback
look.)  

Second, if you saw the date in the article, you will note that it was written
in 1994, so this is very old news.  (strikes old man pose)  Why, I remember
when the article was first written.  I seem to recall the reactions that went
out over rec.arts.anime. [I even remember when we had a newsgroup with that
name.]  Even then, some othe fans didn't get the joke.

Gee, the kneejerks out there give the rest of us a bad name.  Of course,
every group seems to have the kneejerk reactors with them.  I guess we can't
get rid of them.  At least until they begin to understand the concept of
sarcasm.

[BTW, didn't anyone get the comparison between Sailor Moon and Barbie.
