A way of magneticly accelerating an object to very high volocities.  In
Babylon 5, for one example,the Centarui bombarded the Narn Homeworld with
them.  They are also mentioned in the Cyberpunk 2020 rule book, as how the
EEC keeps the rest of the world in line.

An excellent example of a "Modified" mass driver that was converted into a
weapon can be found in the book in titled "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress."
The books plot would make an interesting Anime series. It wouldn't be ultra
hi-tech like Macross but maybe a few steps down.
