Well for all of you who read Face-To-Face, here's its sequel\contiuation
PATIENCE. You don't have to read Face-To-Face to understand it at all
thought it makes the opening a bit more understandable. Oh and one other
thing, it was NOT written by me but by Kain

BGC: Patience

By Kain The Seeker
   AKA Andrew Graham (kaintskr@aol.com)

Quincy looked at the board long and hard. It had been almost a week
since he had received his foe's move. Since then he had spent many hours
looking at the board, trying to read her plan of attack and plotting his
countermoves.
He was among the best players in the chess world, and could have
easily taken many of the current grandmasters if he had desired to play
competitively. Sylia was one of the few that had ever really challenged him,

forced him to think through the plans and actions he would take.
She was everything her father, Katsuhito Stingray, had been. And
much more. She had his genius and drive, the creativity that had brought
about the boomer was there and she knew how to exercise it when
needed. She possessed the knack to master any technical skill or science
that she set her mind to, just like him. She had used it to build a
financial
empire from the meager dividends her father's estate paid off. She possessed
the cold efficient nature of a corporate administrator, something Katsuhito
never had.
She also had her father's flaws. A unbendable moral riggidness that
he had come to both like and despise, an echo of her father's own moral code.
The same code that had forced Quincy to kill him, despite all the excutives
plans and hopes for the young genius. So much potential, Quincy shook his
head, that had to be wasted. Katsuhito had one major and deadly flaw, a lack
of understanding on how the realities of life really worked. Sylia's
childish crusade had already taught her more than her father had ever
learned. It gave him hope for his plans to see that.
Perhaps, he thought as he tapped his pawn and planned out the
possible countermoves and actions of his opponent and finding the results not
to his liking, or maybe not.
After Katsuhito there had been Mason. Sharp and intelligent, the
young man already understood what life was really about. Too much ambition
can be just as bad as too little though, he reflected. Brian knew, at least
on a subconscious level, that he wasn't fit for the chairman's plans.
His obsession and jealously of Sylia was a later reflection of that
realization. Trying to prove that he was better and more suited than she
would ever be. Quincy smiled bitterly at the memories while he explored
another tactic that might work.
The elder Stingray wasn't a realistic choice, too much idealism, and
Mason was already too cold-blooded and set in his own plans to be changed
significantly. Quincy blamed himself for that, he had pushed the executive
too fast in his training. That ruined him by inciting an unsuitable thirst
for power. Quincy had come to that shortly after he had reluctantly order
Mason to eliminate Katsuhito, but he didn't really see another possible
choice to use for his plans.
Till the agents that he had tasked with the surveillance of
Katsuhito's children intercepted a data cartridge for young Sylia from her
father. Katsuhito's last dying move. Quincy had investigated the cartridge
and was impressed with the risk that the dead genius had taken with his own
daughter.
Using methods developed from his own boomer experiments, Stingray had found
a way to program a human mind. He would leave all his knowledge and memories
for his daughter, who Quincy was surprised to find had already received
several `augmentations' from her father. As had her brother Mackie.
I misjudged you, Katsuhito. Quincy thought to himself as he tried a
move with his queen. You were able to be cold and calculating when needed,
but to use your own children?
He had the tape analyzed and then came up with his own plan. At
first he thought about programming the girl to be a mirror image of himself,
a
complete mental carbon copy, but discarded that as ultimately self-defeating.
He altered most of the memories on the cartridge, editing out all the
private interaction between himself and her father. Then he added one scene,
hopefully the catalyst to evoke the state of mind that he desired. Scattered
footage from the night of her father's murder, with the final image of Mason
shooting him.
She would be Mason's foil, a catalyst to try and temper him. Mason
would be the target that she would be aimed at. Quincy would merely sit back
and watch the two fight till only one remained standing. Hopefully
the survivor would suit his, and Genom's, purpose.
Sylia had been a balancing element, something to counter the fools
that worked for him and plotted to further their own ends. She had helped,
however unwillingly, keep his company strong and fit by trimming away the
reckless and foolhardy.
Quincy tapped the rook and plotted the battle out in his mind's eye.
She was the best student that he had ever had, even if Sylia didn't realize
it. She had the intellect and the drive, when his lessons were complete and
the illusions that she harbored about her father's crusade were dispelled
she would be ready to take her true place.
He moved the rook and took the knight. It would be a long time
before someone like Sylia Stingray would loose those ideals he knew from
experience, but he was sure that in the end she would see the rightness of
his ways. Maybe, he reflected, it was time to maneuver the Knights into a
situation where Sylia would have to sacrifice one of them. Like he had done
with his queen in the last move.
He had the time and patience to teach her all the lessons that he
learned. After all, he reflected, she might be the last chance I have to
save all that I have made after I am gone. All he had to do was practice a
little patience.
