There was a short-lived Marvel comic about 11 years ago called
"Strikeforce Morituri." Earth of the near future was under siege by a
group of ravenous aliens known as "The Horde." The Morituri were
volunteers subjected to a process that gave them random superpowers and
less than 12 months to live. If the aliens didn't kill them, they would
suddenly spontaneously combust. It probably didn't last because none of
the characters lived long enough for the reader to form any sort of
attachment to them.

And yes, it comes from the Latin. Morituri means "we who are about to
die," and this was the motto of the Strikeforce.
