I have to agree with Lawson-san. Redneck, you're kinda missing the
point of fanfiction if you set such strict guidelines for what you do
and don't read. You seem to be expecting nothing but manga
novelizations, or nothing but material that purely follows the
manga/anime. I hate to tell you this, but if that was the case, the
only "fanfic" writers would be the creators of the series themselves.
Well, this is where we have some things to work out. I don't mind
alternate-reality stories and the like, within reason. Furthermore, I think
there is room for a host of 'untold' stories in any anime series or universe
you care to pick. Finally, there are mixfics (like 'The Surreal World')
which take characters and place them in new environments and situations with
other series' charas.
However, some consistency and respect is owed to the original material, the
characters and the unique universe they live in, or else the story ceases to
be of those characters and that universe and becomes something alien using
the names of those charas and that universe. With only two exceptions (Heart
of the Home and Right Side of the Ledger, I believe), Lawson has in my very
lonely and humble opinion crossed that line.
The reason we write fanfics is because we can ask ourselves the
question "What if?". If we can't ask that question, and instead must
limit ourselves to saying, "This is," then we've successfully
eliminated the element of our own imaginations.
Well, consider this: THESE ARE NOT YOUR CHARACTERS. THIS IS NOT YOUR
UNIVERSE. At the very least, you owe some respect to the wishes and creative
ideas of the creator. Asking questions like, for instance, "What if this
android, which we know works, didn't really work?" spoils the story for me
before it begins.
One of the projects I'm working on, "Ecchi 1/2," is almost entirely a new
universe, except it starts with the basic prototypes of the R 1/2 charas.
Basically, I recast them, or I intensified them, basically rewriting them
from the ground up. I'm fully aware of how hypocritical this makes me. All I
can say in defense is, I make no pretense of it being a Ranma 1/2 story.
Ecchi 1/2 is a total reboot.
