Well, most of them were not completely defined at the beginning of
the story.  Think of the way she tells off Genma when the
Jusenkyou Curse is revealed.

Heh, you could have named their superior officer "Godai".  That
would also enable you to make a few side-references to Maison
Ikkoku.  :)

Sure, but I meant that the reference would have been better if it
was more subtle, i.e. if you kept calling him "the Zen Monk",
leaving it to the reader to figure it out.
