DRAGGING TIME

--------------

Tired, so fuck'in tired. I'm beyond the point of exhaustion. Can't even
sleep in this fucking APC. Damn engine must be a couple hundred CC's. Taki
is there dozing away. Rookie bastard.

The call came in seconds ago. The sounds of the APC were filled with the
usually snack, click, whirl of equipment. I grab my helmet and flak jacket
donning them quickly. We check and double check our gear and do it again
once more. God I hate the smell of the face mask all rubbery sweet and shit.

Some boomer waxed one of those flying pancakes. Most of the time its
Firebee's, open caskets as we call them. Dumb bastards have been using the
same choppers since '27. Blame it on the politicians. They say cut taxes,
and we pay for the gap in lives.

The siren comes on and the engine rumbles. The APC sounds like one of those
tanks in the movies like a roaring monster. Last chance for a quick doze has
just gone to hell.

Silence, that harsh oppressive silence. All of us just suited up and waiting
for the inevitable. We here the signals over the comm. net jacked into the
rear cab speakers. They're falling like flies, the choppers. The screams...
gunfire...all of it. The bastard lieutenant thought it would help by giving
us an idea of the tactical layout. Dumb asshole.

The APC slams to a halt, we bail out deploying into a skirmish line. There's
no cover. Hiding in a store front is just gonna draw fire towards the civvies
inside.

Everything seems so calm. No one on the streets, no cars...nothing. Its a
shitball of a district anyways. We prepare weapons, jam a few extra clips
into our flak jackets. One of the rookies slides a shock plate into the
front pocket of the his flak jacket, bad idea. A round hits that metal
plate hard enought it'll shatters creating more shrapnel. That's the same
reason we stopped using the 'hard' armor back in '29.

The next call comes directly into our helmet rigs. There's no help coming
for us. The mobile force is deploying in the next district. The richer
section of town; they don't give a shit about these slums. They need time
to evacuate the civvies and set up a cross fire at an intersection down
there.

I think Anna was telling me about some lingerie store in the other district.
Stop, focus. Can't think of things like...gotta job to do. Breath in,
breath out, calmly.

We're to stall the boomer. Damn rich fucks, don't have common sense like the
wretches here waiting so long before getting out or under cover. I hear the
fucking boomer coming. Several flashes go off in the distance.

The lieutenant is spouting off into the comm. rig. Finally, the pretty boy
shows his true face as a coward. Sure, he acted so gung-ho when he orders
us around. The fucker better grab a gun and some armor.

He's wining about how we ain't boomer hunters just a hostage rescue squad.
We've got no heavy weapons, no rockets, just a shit load of personel weapons.
He's think'in about his worthless life.

We're thinking about the civvies running the hell out of the district behind
us.

Simultaneously all of us click the safeties off our guns. I bring the M42-A1
assault rifle up to high port. I cast a glance to the rest of the squad.
Taki is gripping his automatic shotgun tightly. He's scared. I don't blame
him. The others turn their heads. All of us meet each other's gaze. I
silently nod. Good luck. Sweat begins to build on my forehead.

The boomer came at us like a demon riding on a chariot of fire. We emptied
our guns against the machine. Tracers splattered all across its armored
torso doing absolutely shit. It just passed through the storm of gunfire.
We kept firing anyways.

It wasn't like the humanoid ones we saw the other squads nail. It had legs
small narrow ones. The body seemed to be like a shell with two antennae like
stalks. They were probably eyes or something. Their wasn't even a defined
head.

The boomer raised its arm bringing up a massive cannon spitting counter fire.
One fell..then another..and another..everything drowned out in white when
the APC took a hit.

"ANNA!!!"

She pulled her helmet off hurling it into the nearby gutter. Red
blood flowed onto the pavement as her wounds opened more from the movement.
She heard the battle go off into the distance. She didn't care at the
moment. Gritting her teeth, she rolled onto her back. She muffled her cry
as her body seemed to explode in pain.
She looked down at her chest and the holed flak jacket. Limply, her
neck rolled to the side viewing the cracked but still fuctioning time piece,
"We've got a live one!!!" The medic shouted running over to her
side. Pulling out a knife, he slashed open the flak jacket. "Come on fight
damn you," he screamed as he injected psdeuo-adrenaline into her heart. She
jerked forwards swallowing a groan. Her arm grabbed his forearm pulling him
to the side. She pulled his wrist towards her face. A look of resignation
passed through her features as she slumped back down eyes closing. It had
been worth it.
"Get out of the way!!!" Another medic shouted pulling out the twin
paddles of a defibrillator. "Clear!!!!"
	"Shock her again!!!
	"Clear!!!"
