Thinking about my original post, I got an idea.  The reason IMNSHO that Ranma
prefers Akane is that she doesn't treat him like a prize to be won.  To the
other girls involved, it's a case of "I want him, you can't have him."  In
this story, we have Akane going along with the idea, treating him like a
possession too.  To Ranma, that might seem like a big betrayal.  What if he
"convinced" the crew to make an additional clone of him and he skipped out?
 The first question would be where would he go?  I think that he would stick
around watching how the people he thought cared for him would treat him like
an object.

Just some thoughts.
