I thought I should weigh in at least once.  Our club has two mailing 
lists, one for on-topic discussions about the club, and another for 
spam, no rules.  It's worked well.

Well, fortunately, on this list, people are pretty good at marking
their posts for what they are. [SPAM], [FIC], y'know. So, I have a
procmail file that filters my mail before it comes into my box. It
really cuts down on things alot. I have no spam, and I see no C&C ( I
like giving it straight to the author, or getting it straight from
people..), and it works great. Anybody on a Unix system (or using a
fairly good mail program in WinDoze) should be able to kill stuff
off. 
For people on Unix systems, ask your sysadmin if you've got procmail
enabled on the system. If you do, mail me, and I'll send you my
filters. It'll be easy to build your own from there. :)
