First off, sorry for the spam. I'm trying to cut down.
I noticed the recent postings dealing with file compression formats.
>From personal experience, this is what I have to say about
compression:
.zip: If you have image/program files, or large groups of files, to
compress, PKZIP and WinZip are the best way to go. It's easier to
compress large groups of files and keep track of them, and you
usually get a compression ratio of 50 to 70 percent.
.gz: I would NOT use GZIP if I had groups of files to compress, or if
I was compressing image or program fiiles. But, if I were compressing
a single text file, such as a fanfic, or compressing a small enough
number of them that I didn't need to bundle them, I would use GZIP.
On text files it usually gets a compression ratio of less than 40
percent. I've done the math every time I downloaded a fanfic from the
RAAC archives.
