Hello all,
After reading through the posts on Damon's idea about splitting or at least,
starting up "divided" lists, I have the following to say.
Damon, I'm happy for you that you have been able to upgrade your net service.
However, there are still many here who do not have that as an option. Please
consider the community before the self.
At a glance, the idea of a split list seems like it would bring back the old
days and help people get to know each other again. However, that is only at a
glance and only if _one_ new list is started. I say this because starting
sub-divided new lists will present a thinned out mailing list which would be
akin to planting new seeds when the nearby bush is still maturing.
The "old" list was close not because of organization. :p Only WWolf knows how
truly chaotic and mind-rending the list was back then behind the scenes ;)
If not organization, then what brought people together? People. People became
interested in other people because of like interests. We still have that here
in the "big" list. So what's the difference? Simple answer is that we, the
people subb'd to the list, have lives. As the list grew up, we were advancing
in our own lives as well.
Damon, you moved, Nabs moved, Wwolf himself had moved. Some of us graduated
and now attend college, some of us work full-time and some of us are even
married. ;) Our RL changes just as this list changes. The only difference is
that as time goes on and as more people come, the list itself will grow.
Shouldn't we give the list its change to grow?
I know there doesn't seem to be as many posts with socializing. But can you
really wonder? Whenever such posts were made, people complained that it was
causing too much spam and bandwidth waste. I know there are serious fanfiction
reader/writers on this list. I respect their desire to learn, aid others, and
produce some truly captivating works.
At the same time, I'm also aware of the people who see this place as a great
get-together, a small little town, if you will. I know since I see myself as
being in a little house somewhere in town. ;) Hi neighbors. This is sometimes
where our spam comes from. And it is here that the writers can sometimes see
some interesting dialogue and write from ideas based on it.
My point? We need each other in a way that is akin to a town. By splitting us
up, we will have to rebuild, as if an earthquake split the town up. We've gone
through good and bad times together as a community, we've worked together and
even agreed on things together. Sure, we don't know every person's name.. but
then again, how many people can claim they know all the names of the people in
their community? {Those of you who can, my hat goes off to ya. :)}
Damon's idea is based on his personal views and needs. I respect that.
However, Damon, we are achieving as a whole here what a split list would have
to re-do from scratch all over again. Please realise this.
*sighs*
Well, I'm sorry for my rant, but I care about this list. I care about all of
you as if you lived as neighbors in my neighborhood. *smiles* If one of you
needed to come over and borrow a cup of sugar, I'd be more than happy. But if
we aren't together, then the slim chance we have at being friends will be
cleaned off the slate and we'll start from scratch again.
With Love for the group,
Wing.
