Damon, I've already told you my opinion on this, but I'd like to add
a comment to what you've already said.

I remember the ML in its heyday, too, and I miss it.  But I think that
the list in its current form, though big and ungainly, is still a 
good list.  If you want to use an analogy, let's compare
the ML to a child.  In its infancy, it was just getting to know
the world and people around it.  This foundation led to a growth
spurt that includes the flame wars and the rehashing of topics.
Now, there are more fics that are posted (and unfinished) than
there ever used to be.  I rather like this, and I've not gotten over
some of the more recent ones.  Splitting the list would only lead
to confusion.
