Note:  They are not spirits posessing humans.  They're more like an alter
ego.  My understanding is that Pai developed a "human" personality because
she wanted to become human resulting in a division between her "human"
personality and her "sanjiyan" personaliy.

At least as long as humans have existed possibly longer

There are at least two.  They might be the only ones or there might be
more.  Pai and (I can't remember his name) are the only ones in the anime.
I _think_ that they might be the last two.  But I'm not sure.

something silly like that). 

No, each of their goals is different.  Pai wants to become human.  The
other sanjiyan wants to have absolute power.
