Actually I did catch it, and I figured
1) the creators used Tai-Chi in the opening because it looks cool. Ranma
may or may not actually know any Tai-Chi.
2) it's entirely possible that Ranma knows some Tai-Chi but _doesn't_ know
it as Tai-Chi, he might just think of it as another aspect of Kempo
(especially since Tai-Chi is easily incorporated in to many martial arts
including Karate, Jujitsu, several Kung Fu styles, and Kendo. yes there
are Tai-Chi sword forms as well.)
