Granted. There are fanfics that I find... counter to my belief system.
Either because of technical reasons (writing style), or due to
characterizations I find... deviating... from what I perceive to be the REAL
characterization.
The operative word here, folks, is PERCEIVE.
C&C is my take on that perception. I let the author know that I find the
characterization different from what I would have done.
I also, if I have anything caustic to say about the fanfic, do it privately.
Unless of course, he issue is so great that I have to do it publicly, in
which case we do it as tactfully as possible.
Now I know some of you equate the word 'tactful' for 'hypocrite'. I respect
that. Tactfully.
[Warning, TimeRunner Causticity Alert]
Damn, I'm running low on blood sugar again. I'm starting to get caustic.
Like that last time I put my foot in my mouth...
[[[Sugar Break!!!]]]
Okay. Let's continue.
Since everyone is jumping back on the "Bitter End" issue, I may as well.
I gave Zen my take on it. I disagreed on his characterization of Akane,
sure. But the fact of the matter is, he had a story to tell, and I wanted to
see what it was. The mere fact that I had to respond in 'creative
commentary' shows you how it turned out.
Hi, Zen.
"There are other worlds, Takezo."
So here's Ranma-chan. Once again, I disagree with Akane's characterization.
But I see what the author is driving at, even though the reasons aren't
apparent.
Now, does anyone see my point if I don't tell anyone?
Since no one probably remembers anymore, this is MY take on why Akane is so
temperamental, as told in said spamfic.
[begin quote]
"You have to understand," said TimeRunner, "that these are two of
the proudest people I have ever had the chance to observe."
"What has that got to do with anything?!"
"Calm down, Takezo," said TimeRunner. "You have to understand that,
while each of them loves the other, neither of them are sure that their
feelings are mirrored by the other. And so, they can't show their
weakness...that they have feelings for each other, simply because they're
afraid to be rejected. You know that."
"S...So?", Takezo sobbed.
"So," TimeRunner continued, "they have to hide their feelings.
Unfortunately, they overcompensate for their own feelings. Ranma does it by
insulting Akane, Akane by getting angry."
[end quote]
Does anyone see what I'm driving at?
It doesn't matter if you agree or not. The fact is, I want you to SEE what I
mean. In fact, I find it intriguing that someone would disagree with my
view, and yet see the point anyway.
Which comes to my point. This is WHY I C&C. To show that I see the point,
even if I don't agree with it.
Does anyone agree? No, wait, let me rephrase that. Does anyone see my point?
