Van slowly looked about him.  The flames consuming the once proud and mighty
city climbed into the night sky.  The red glow from their light flickered on
Escaflowne's armor.  Before him stood a nightmare creature risen from the
very depths of Hell.  Its sole purpose:  absolute destruction.  The others
had fallen before it's terrible strength.  Van stood alone.  The monster
towered over Escaflowne, easily dwarfing the great Guymelef in size and
power.  Yet he had no choice.

The fate of mankind rested heavy on his shoulders.  Once more into battle,
Van thought to himself.  Then, with a grim determination he drew
Escaflowne's blade.  Screaming he charged towards the beast that had laid
his friends low.  Bringing back his sword, Van lunged and struck -- only to
bounce harmlessly off the monster's now visible energy shield.  Slowly, the
Angel turned and looked down at Van....
