Maybe, maybe not. However, I have the impression that the Amazon villiage
has at least experienced Men's Lib, and more likely to be only barely
matriarchal. In a strict patriarchal society, women aren't allowed to
fight. By extension, if Amazon society is that strict, Mousse would never
have been taught the martial arts. 

        *Nod*.  As far as I know, the only man I have seen in the
Amazon village, or from the Amazon village, is Mousse.  Perhaps he
was the child of some Amazon woman and the man who had defeated her
in combat - and considering the skill level of the Amazons, there
might not be many husbands for the Amazons.

        Consider also that the husbands for those Amazons might
occupy a respectable position in Amazon society, for skill in combat
is nothing to scoff at and to defeat an Amazon at her own game is
a rare event.

        Also, why was Mousse taught the martial arts when it is
known that he is dependent on his glasses?  Isn't that a sign of
weakness?  Perhaps the Amazons don't really place much value on
eyesight - after all, there are blind fighters with more skill than
those who can see.  At any rate, Mousse can still see shapes
and he can generally make his way around even without them,
so he is not TOTALLY blind without his glasses.

Another is that outsider law; a strict
matriarchal society would also have the defeated Amazon kill the MEN as
well as the women, because it would be an insult to everything the tribe
stands for.

        I got the general impression that the Amazons want strong 
husbands for strong offspring, so even strict matriarchal societies
might not want to kill such good fighters as the men who defeat
them.  Whether Shampoo's society is strictly matriarchal or not
is beside the point for this argument.

Indeed, seeing how Shampoo prostrates herself to Ranma instead of just
grabbing (or killing) him and go. You see her _kneeling_ before him
offering a tray with a bowl of steaming ramen on it. (Her reappearance,
immediately prior to the Cat Tongue arc.) Strictly matriarchal? HAH!

        I agree she's nothing like Kodachi, who would take Ranma
by guile, force or the two combined, whereas Shampoo would prefer
to get Ranma by winning his love.  The only part where she actually 
uses underhand tactics to win his love, for good I might add, is where 
she uses the love pills on the bracelet.

        What about the other times, you might say, like the SOD
man instant powder or specially spiced xiumai or the Contrary
Jewel?  Well, note that in the first two instances mentioned
above that she only wanted him to date/kiss her and to hug her,
respectively, while the last instance was all Cologne's
scheme.  As far as I know, there is nothing to suggest to me
that Shampoo knew what the jewel did to its wearer.  What do you
think she (minus the jewel) would do if her great-great-grandmother 
told her that Ranma was coming to declare his love for her?

More likely, the women of the Amazons still do the majority of the work,
BUT they keep the power to themselves and out of the hands of greedy men
who don't deserve it (seeing that they don't lift a finger ;). 

        Of course they'd do most of the work.  There aren't many
men around anyways, since not many can defeat an Amazon in combat.
Seems to me that the law is somewhat counterproductive to the
survival of the Amazons, since they only want to marry strong
husbands, yes?

The women
wait on their husbands hand and foot, but will gladly chastize an uppity
male.

Of course, this is speculation.

        Yup.  Still, your example is a little contradictory in
itself, since you had just finished saying that the Amazons are
probably barely matriarchal and even equals don't wait hand and foot
on their peers.  I don't think that the women wait on their husbands
'hand and foot' as you say, more like they will tend to their
husband's needs but only if said men are nice in their manner of
asking and are reasonable in their requests, since there are probably
not many men in that village anyhow...

Man : Shabon, would you get me a beer, then rub my shoulders, then
      wash my back when I go take a bath?

Shabon : (corner of the eye) Don't push it, buddy, though the last
         request sounds...interesting.

Man : Uhh, Indoor Amazon Combat Techniques?

Shabon : Keeps you trim, and hardly anything gets broken.  That I
         think I'll do for you....

Man : (sweatdrop)  Uh...okay.
