Hah hah, I just saw Neon Genesis Evangelion episodes 1 - 6 during an anime
marathon this saturday with a bunch of friends (Not that bad, heh, some
tenchi, ranma, nuku nuku, gundam, Nadia) and I must say Gainax rules the
world! (Along with AIC)

Well, I'm trying to diversify, and thus keeping diversity in mind, here is
my first ever, Neon Genesis Evangelion fanfic. (Don't expect too much from
it. I've seen less than 1/2 of the TV show.)

Fatherly Love.
By Michael Chen

A Neon Genesis Evangelion Fanfiction.

I just saw the first 6 episodes of this series today, and what the
hell, I'll write something about it. Well, a couple things compel
to me, relating to this story. I've heard that Asuka gets sort of
close with Shinji, and heck, I think Rei is more interesting.
(Besides, Asuka is just the largest stereotype I've ever seen for
loud, brash Americans.)

This takes place right after episode 6, as I haven't seen anymore.

Part I

Misato sighed as she stared at Shinji as she bandaged his hands.
"Baka! You know, grabbing onto the plug like that! Keep on
doing these rash things, and with your attitude, you'll be dead in
no time!" Lucky for Shinji, his suit, fortunately designed to
amplify his neural interface with Unit 01, had saved him from
serious damage.

"Yes." Shinji sat there for a moment, his silence driving
Misato insanely mad.

"I've had it enough with you saying 'yes.' I'd like to see
some more emotion from you!" Misato watched Shinji's head dip
slightly as he listened to her unload weeks of frustration on him.
It wasn't that Misato enjoyed screaming at a boy, it was just that
he was the most repressed boy she had ever seen. That boy just
didn't exhibit his emotions.

It was his Father, Misato silently cursed Gendou for being such
an asshole to his own son, and then pampering Rei in front of his
own son. Misato blinked back a few tears, as she could imagine the
pain that the sad boy in front of her suffered. How could his
Father use him like a tool, like something dispensable, not
important at all. Instinctively, Misato hugged Shinji, and looked
into his eyes.

"We'd better get home. Besides, you must be starved." Misato
grabbed at Shinji's jacket, which was hanging on a hook on the wall,
 and tossed it to him.

Shinji caught the jacket, and donned it. "Is it going to be
more instant food? I'm sick of eating instant ramen."

"Baka!" Shinji winced as he felt Misato give him a hard but
not stunning knock to the head. "Of course not, I feel in the mood
to cook" Shinji paled ever so slightly, thanking the gods that he
had a strong enough endurance to swallow her cooking. 'At least it
isn't instant food...' He started to silently lament.

Touji looked at Shinji. "Hey, Shinji. That was so awesome!
When you blew away that Angel!" Shinji sighed, he just didn't like
it when someone associated him with the Eva unit. Interfacing with
the Eva Unit was an experience that was so painful to Shinji. It
was his receptacle for his pain, his suppressed emotions. It was
the time he could express his anger, as his mind was taken over
with berserker rage.

"Yeah, I guess it was cool." Shinji looked depressed as he
looked at Rei. In his mind, he thought about the three words that
Rei had said to him before they took on that angel. Her last words
to him were "Goodbye," as if she had meant to die.

Kensuke then walked up, practically echoing what Touji had said.
  "Shinji! You're unstoppable!"

Shinji turned away. "I guess so." He truly didn't know why
his friends liked him. Did they like him for who he was? Or did
they like him because he was a "hero"? Heck, Shinji, by judging
the glances that his friends liked to give to Misato, he could also
deduce other possible reasons.

With a sigh, Shinji stared at the clock for a moment, and then
directed his attention to the teacher.

An angel was coming. A giant, lumbering hulk, ponderously
crushing the land as it slowly approached Tokyo 3. Massively built,
it was just as tall as Eva-01, but it was a lot wider, giving the
appearance of unmatchable stability. It came from the east, the
sun shining behind it as the giant aberration crunched its way to
Tokyo.

Misato was disturbed by an alarm. "What is it?" She shouted,
but she didn't need an answer. The vid screen provided more than
enough information. "My god, look at the size of that thing! We
need to intercept that monster! Call in Rei and Shinji!"

Rei stood passively staring at Shinji, watching him trying to
interact with his friends. Sure he was doing pretty well, but
something was wrong. He wasn't completely compatible, as he would
seem to be uncomfortable at some moments.

"So Shinji, how is Ms. Katsuragi? You're so lucky to be living
with a babe." Shinji practically stared at the two boys weirdly.

"She's fine, I guess. She can't cook, but she is very nice."
He fell silent as he thought about the somewhat negative
descriptions. He didn't want to admit that he did like Misato, in
that she was a very nice person, who truly cared for him, at least
more than his father.

Rei called out. "Shinji. It's time." A low rumbling in the
distance served as a preview of what was coming. "There is an
Angel 20 miles from here, and rapidly approaching!" Shinji
muttered something that could be interpreted as "Why me?" as he
followed Rei.

Shinji didn't know what happened, but as he opened his bag to
grab his security pass, he tripped, his stuff scattering over the
place. Rei didn't even pause to wait, as she ran through the
security gate. Hastily grabbing papers and shoving them into his
satchel, Shinji finally retrieved his card, and charged through the
gate, only to find that Rei had taken the turbo elevator without
even waiting for him.

He knew that he was going to be delayed.

Gendou was not pleased at all, as he saw only Rei step from the
platform. Deep in his mind, he found himself cursing at his
spineless son, who had obviously dared not to show up. 'Important?
I once was like him, I thought others should treasure my like, but
I learned that in this world, I am but a tool for another. My son
is my tool. And I'm a tool of the UN...'

Gendou stiffly spoke to Rei. "Suit up, Rei. I guess you're
going to intercept the Angel." In his mind, he didn't want to sent
Rei. But, weighing the needs of the city over his own feelings, he
knew that there was no other way.

Misato stared at the screen. "Ikari! The Angel has breached
out outer defenses! It will reach us in ten minutes! We need to
deploy the Evangelion!"

Gendou looked gruffly at Rei, and despite his desires to keep
her protected he waved her off. "Go." Rei nodded, and she walked
briskly to the dressing room.

"Oh great, where is the security pass now?" By now Shinji
practically felt despair as he couldn't quite find his passcard in
the mess of papers, books, and other school material. Ever second,
he could feel the vibrations from the Angel as it closed in on
Tokyo 3. Crying out triumphantly, Shinji's hands felt the card in
the mess of papers, and he slid it through the reader.

Before running to the elevator, he heard klaxons go off, and a
low rumbling coming from the earth. Shinji swore to himself, as it
could mean that they were sending out Rei. 'I've got to hurry up.'

Misato turned her head as she heard the sounds of feet running
briskly, and within moments, a breathless Shinji entered the
control center. Gasping for air, Shinji stammered out an excuse.
"Sorry, Misato-san, I had trouble finding my passcard."

Gendou, who had been staring intently at the screen, looked
vehemently at his son. "Why did you pick such a time to screw up?"
Misato gritted her teeth as she knew that Shinji didn't purposely
make himself late. She couldn't bear to watch Command Ikari
lambaste his son, but against her better judgment, she said nothing.
Well, she would have said something, but Maya interrupted her.

"Captain Misato! There is a huge surge of heat coming from the
Angel!" Just as she finished her read out of the sensors, the
Angel let loose a blast that threw Eva 00 back.

Misato shouted out. "Rei! Rei! Are you alright?"

There was a slight delay and a small response. "Yes."

Gendou lost it. He turned to his son, and without complete
disregard for everyone listening started shouting. "Shinji, you
spineless coward! I want you to go and fight that Angel now! Why
are you standing there like a fool? Why can't you do anything
right?" Gendou continued on and on, ranting when he felt a slap
across his face.

"You idiot! You stand there and make fun of your son like
that? How do you expect him to perform if he can't expect any
support from his own father!" It was Misato. Misato's voice
calmed as she spoke to Shinji. "Suit up. Rei isn't experienced
enough."

    Shinji silently walked away.

Ritsuko leaned over and whispered into Misato's ear. "You are
going to get into trouble!"

Misato scowled. "Yeah, but at least I don't feel guilty doing
nothing to help that poor kid. I wonder how he could bear all of
that."

* * *

Unit 00 was thrown back again from a large blast. Shaking her
head to fight off the disorientation, Rei fought to get her Eva
back on it's feet. She heard a comforting voice. It was Gendou.
"Never mind Rei, you've taken enough. Eva 01 will be there to
relieve you."

As if the timing couldn't be more perfect, the building next to
Unit 00 opened up revealing Eva 01. As soon as Eva 01 was clear
from the building, it opened fire with the 60mm Autocannon.

Misato muttered. "He learned. He's controlling his fire, and
his accuracy is up."

Maya looked at her monitor. "Captain, the depleted uranium
shell are doing minimal damage to the Angel. It's AT field is
still strong."

Misato spoke out to Rei and Shinji. "Ok you two, it seems
ranged weaponry are out of the question. You'll have to do it the
hard way."

Suddenly a large energy wave blasted forth from the Angel, that
picked up both Evangelions and propelled them backwards somewhat.
Eva 01 fought to stand up. Unit 00 was offline. "Unit 00 lost all
power! The neural pickups are failing! Interfacing has dropped to
5%!"

Gendou was visible agitated. "We must retrieve Rei at once.
Try to get her back online. Now!"

Shinji could hear the shouting that was coming from the control
center, and looking over at Eva 00, he could feel that it wasn't
going to be able to move at all. He needed to give Rei some cover.
Struggling to his feet, Shinji could see the Angel approaching,
and despite it's slow speed, the monster was going to be close in
minutes.

He heard Misato shouting. "Unit 00's damaged! We can't have
her back up in time!" Then Misato directly addressed Shinji.
"Shinji! Extract Rei's plug and bring her back! You can't go
alone against that thing!"

He heard his own father shouting. "Rei! Rei!" There was an
absolute disregard for him.

All of these conflicting emotions within Shinji, and not a
single way to relieve of them, to let them dissipate. Shinji
slowly walked toward the Angel.

Misato had a good hunch what had happened, and she didn't like
it at all. "Shinji! Stop! There is no need for this! Shinji
stop!" All they got back was silence, and Eva-01 screamed as it
charged at the Angel, which was in range.

Eva-01 shoved its fist through the AT field, and grabbed a hold
of the Angel. With a bloodthirsty cry, the Evangelion summoned its
blade and stabbed it into the creature's hideous body. Misato
stared at the screen as Eva 01 started to experience wild power
spikes.

Unit 00 twitched. Ritsuko was amazed. "Unit 00 revived!"

Rei watched passively as Shinji mindlessly bludgeoned the Angel,
but she noticed something disturbing, with every blow, the Angel
started to get brighter and brighter. Misato noticed this as well.
"What's happening, the Angel's mass is slowly increasing!"

Ritsuko stared at her monitor. "There is a huge power spike
coming from the Angel!" Tiny pinpricks of light flashed forth from
the Angel, all striking Eva-01. "Global damage to Eva 01! Armor
damaged, effectiveness nonexistent!" And Shinji stood up, filled
with rage at the Angel.

"Unit 00 is back online! Almost no damage, just the neural
link effectiveness is running at 75% normal levels."

Gendou seemed to breath in relief. "Recall her immediately."
Unit 00 slowly made its way to the elevator.

"What about Eva 01!" Rei slowly made her way to the elevator,
when her movement attracted the Angel's attention. Again, an
energy spike built up within the Angel. "The Angel is preparing to
fire!" The angel slowly raised its arm at the back of Rei.

Gendou shouted. "Watch out Rei! Behind you!"

Shinji momentarily felt his anger calm down as through his
bloodlust, he noticed the danger to Rei. With a loud growl, Shinji
pounced on the Angel, and started to punch its torso wildly.

Rei turned around, just in time to see Eva-01, all of its armor
blown off, fighting against the Angel. Suddenly multiple energy
blasts bored their way through Eva 01. An unearthly scream echoed.
 Misato couldn't help but sob.

Eva 01 started to thrash about uncontrollably, and quite
coincidentally, it shoved its blade through the Angel. Shinji felt
excruciating pain as it felt numerous spears shoved through his
chest. But with amazing endurance, Shinji grabbed a hold of the
Angel's neck and started to crush it.

Gendou muttered. "Amazing, he's still killing the Angel." The
Angel started to shake wildly, and it plowed its fist through Eva
01. Shinji let out a scream, and all over, the Evangelion's
muscles powerfully contracted, smashing the Angel to bits.

"System wide failure! Shinji's neural activity has ceased!"
Misato looked at the monitors, and they were all dead. As long as
Shinji's mind was interfaced to the dying mech, he was going to die.

"Break the neural link! God damn it! Disconnect him!"

"We can't! He's interfaced with Eva 01 too deeply! We can
break them!" Another alarm started to ring. "Oxygen levels in the
plug have dropped below acceptable levels!" Misato started to
panic as the situation gradually progressed from bad to worse.

Gendou Ikari was unusually calm as he watched.

Pressure is a funny thing, as it tends to make humans a little
more creative than normal. Misato shouted. "Rei! Put Eva 1 into
the elevator! Now!" Rei's Evangelion lumbered over to Unit 01,
and placed it into the nearest elevator.

Misato rushed to the platform, where the capsule was dropped.
Tearing open the door, with complete disregard for the liquid
coming out of the unit, Misato pulled out Shinji. "Medical team!
Where is the medical team!" Misato took one look at Shinji, and
she turned away immediately as the sight was beyond sickening.

Shinji's face was bathed in blood, as his blood pressure had
skyrocketed to such high levels that he was bleeding profusely from
his nose and eyes. But that wasn't the worst part. The worst part
was the fact that his eyes were open, his face distorted. Misato
started to cry all over again.
