Is this based on Inuyasha, or is the similarity just a coincidence?

There is a series called Ushio and Tora (at least, I think that's what
the name is), about a boy who unwittingly releases a demon trapped
underneath his family's temple. Needless to say, the fun begins there.

Well, that makes three, then, 'cause the Tenchi OAV's started the same way
- when young Masaki-san released the demon Ryouko, who had been imprisoned
under the family shrine by his grandfather's sword...

Ushio and Tora came before Tenchi.

We actually had this released in the UK back at the start of
1995, and the first tape shows a copyright for the material of
1993. The original author is Kazuhiro Fujita, and the OAVs came
from Shoggakan via Toshiba Emi.

The UK release was even subtitled, albeit rather eccentrically by
an outfit called Western Connection who've very unfortunately
since gone broke...

It's pretty funny, actually, especially the last three
'mini-episodes' in SD-format... Our own Helen McCarthy described
it as 'Calvin and Hobbes on acid' which somehow sort of sums it
up.
