Looking at this C&C I felt obliged to answer it....
Although this is a responce to a particulair fic it does meet with the
criteria of covering a vast number of works of fiction....

I think that the whole point of fan fiction assumes that there are
alternate worlds/things happening...If we were to assume that fan fiction
did consider everything as cannon then we would be in a hell of alot of
trouple and I would be writing a lot more STAR TREK: THE NIGHT CREW
episodes....just a bunch of people sitting around drinking coffee while
nothing happened....

 Actually these people do exist...
(well in a fictional sense....) You see if this is all someone has
experienced (aside from say, works of fan fiction... then yup this is
correct....)
 You might as well say there is no such thing as ROBOTECH as it's just the
basterd offspring of MACROSS and the rest of the SDF series (well except
for ORGUS).
I think that naming is the province of the writer...
 If you don't like it don't read it or use a universal text search and
chang it yourself...but don't tell the authors to change it. It's their
reality..not yours...

about it if the author did a nice litle rewrite of part one and fixed 
some of the naming and continuity errors, or explained that the thing 
is an alternate universe fanfic.

of the original series...AND which contains BOTH Serena and Usagi...
