Love is What Frightens You The Most
Chapter 2: See My Friends
by Terrence Marks
This is a Sailor Moon fanfic, but all the names, places,
abilities, personalities and situations have been changed a
little, so it picks up exactly where Love is What: Chapter 1,
left off. Chapter 3 will be back with the Ranma characters.

Glossary:
Oneechan: Older sister. Can be used as a title. Used only
because I can't find a good English equivalent.
Notes:
Kaori is NOT a new character. She's from the anime. This
isn't a crossover/Ranma meets Kaori fic. I'm just using her
differently.

Recap: Ranma and Genma arrived at Tendou Dojo to meet Soun
Tendou's two daughters, Akane and Kasumi. After a brief
discussion, Akane wound up with Ranma. Akane's current
boyfriend, Kunou, isn't too keen on Ranma. Kaori has
recently shown up, claiming to be Ranma's wife.
* * *
The colour of the sky was Prussian blue over the courtyard of
Furinkan High. It was lunchtime, and the students were
enjoying an outside lunch. Ranma, who was rather shocked, was
sitting next to Kaori. Kunou and Akane sat together several
yards away.
Ranma's eyes stopped bulging after a few minutes. "Did you say
that I was your husband?"
Kaori nodded. "Our fathers arranged for us to be married."
"So we aren't married yet, right?"
Kaori looked at Ranma. He saw her face, and her smile fell
off of it. "We've missed that little technicality."
"I'm going to have to have a talk with pop."
"Yes. We should tell my father-in-law that I have returned."
Ranma inwardly glowered. Her 'father-in-law' had a lot of
explaining to do. He'd been in town for a day now, and already
he had two fiancees. Life was beginning to get complicated, and
Ranma didn't like that. Ranma also didn't like Kunou.
Kunou strode towards Ranma, bokken in hand. "Thou hast caused
humiliation to my fair Akane, before of her classmates, Ranma!
This I cannot forgive!"
"It's not my fault if the teacher blamed her."
"Thou art a true coward to try to lay blame on the faculty."
"Who are you calling a coward?" Ranma said angrily.
Kunou growled at the seated Ranma and brought his bokken up
for a downward strike. As he began to swing downward,
there was a brief flash of white as his bokken is reduced
to matchstick-sized slivers. Kunou was left holding onto
the handle of his bokken and staring wide-eyed at Kaori.
Kaori brushed the sawdust off of her hands. "Please forgive
my impertinence."
* * *
Kunou was awed. "Such grace..such beauty..such strength. She
must be mine!" He suddenly found himself lying on his back,
staring at the sky. "That hurts, you know!"
Akane loomed behind him. "I thought that I was your
girlfriend."
"Verily, yes, you have a place in my heart."
Akane placed her hands on her hips. "Then what's this about
her being yours?"
"Does not the heart have four chambers, though?"
"Tatewaki, dear. You know that I love you, right?"
"I wear your love around me, like the heavens above."
"If you do as much as look at her, then we'll
find out how many chambers your heart has."
And then it started to rain. For Akane and Kunou, this was no
inconvenience. Sasuke soon appeard behind them with a large
umbrella. For Kaori, this was rather unfortunate, as she had
not wanted to get her robes wet. She walked, quickly yet
with dignity, into the school. For Ranma, however, this was a
very very bad thing. It could have been worse. Most
of students were heading indoors and didn't see the change.
Kunou was looking cautiosly at Akane. Akane was looking at
Kunou, to make sure that he was looking at her.
Coincidentally, Sasuke was pouring tea for Akane and Kunou at
about this time. Sasuke knew that Kunou liked tea when it
rained. Both tea and rain were wet, so they seemed to go
together.
"Tatewaki, shouldn't we go inside? It's raining rather
heavily."
"Should the elements themselves conspire to disrupt
our lunch, they shall fail before the might of
Tatewaki Kunou."
Akane smiled at him.
"Hey. Kunou. I need your tea", said Ranma.
"A lady requests a favour from Tatewaki Kunou, and it shall
be granted."
"Dear, you're staring at her", Akane noted with a hint of anger.
Kunou handed the girl a cup of tea.
"Could you turn around for a moment?" Ranma asked.
Kunou continued staring at her.
"I said, 'Could you turn around for a moment.'"
Kunou continued to stare.
Ranma grabbed Kunou, shook him roughly and threw him to the
ground, face down. She then walked towards the door of the
school, poured the tea over herself, now himself, and went
through the door.
Kunou started to get up.
The door of the school opened and a teacup was thrown out,
hitting Kunou squarely on the back of the head.
* * *
Several minutes later, Kunou woke up in the school clinic.
Sasuke was holding an icepack to his head.
"What happened?"
"That girl tossed you around like a rag doll and then threw a
teacup at you."
"She is powerful. I am more powerful still. I shall conquer
her." Kunou quickly looked around to make sure that Akane
wasn't there. "Where is Akane? Why is she not with me in my
hour of need?"
"I asked her to accompany you to the clinic, but she could not,
because she had to get back to a class. When I reminded her
that she had fifteen minutes until classes started again,
she--"
"That is enough, Sasuke."
* * *
Kasumi was singing a happy song as she sliced carrots for the
night's dinner. It was something she had heard once on a tape
of American music.
"I'm gonna keep well, my vegetables, cart off and sell my
vegetables."
Some people believed that the reason she was in such a daze was
because of low intelligence or trauma.
Neither was the case. She was trying to control herself. She
had a certain urge, and she knew that if she let it get control
of her, she might do something socially unacceptable. She had
to make sure that she didn't do anything rash.
"I love you most of all, my favourite vegetables."
In most people, the drive to get married is only moderately
strong. In Kasumi, it was a giant throbbing desire, parallel
with the desire for food or sleep. She knew that her mere
presence put Dr. Tofuu into an ecstatic daze, the likes of
which are usually only seen by people who take too much of
various illegal substances. In that state, she could convince
Tofuu to do nearly anything.
"If you brought a big brown bag of them home,"
The reason Kasumi acted like she was only partially "with it"
was that she was only partially "with it". It took huge
amounts of self-control not to abuse her power over Tofuu.
If she lost it, well, Dr. Tofuu would probably return to his
senses after a few months to find that he had a wife.
"I'd jump up and down and hope you'd toss me a carrot."
One of the reasons that she hadn't done that yet was that
the effect that Tofuu had on her was the opposite of the
effect that she had on him. Whenever he was around,
she became remarkably clear-headed. Also, it seemed a little
unethical to do something as major as marriage to someone who
was in an altered state of consciousness. She tried to
convince herself that this would be one of those "victimless
crimes" and no one would be hurt, so it would be perfectly
fine to marry him when he was under her influence, but she her
reasoning seemed more than a little suspect.
"I'm gonna be round my vegetables, I'm gonna chow down, my
vegetables"
She carried a picture of him with her at all times, just
in case she needed to think hard. Well, she really
kept the picture because he was such a sweet, cute guy.
Unfortunately, this didn't always work. The last time
she tried to figure out a way to get him to ask her out,
she gazed at the photo and...kept gazing for the next
three hours.
"I love you most of all, my favourite vegetables"

At 3 o'clock, as usual, the mail arrived at the Kunou
mansion. As usual, Sasuke retrieved and sorted it. He saw
a postcard among the bills. On the back was a picture of a
panda. The return address was China Springs, Hawaii. The text
read:
"Returning to Tokyo with ukelele. Would say more, but my
stories are too groovy to be written.
-Kunou"
Sasuke used an age-old ninja method of making bad things like
this go away. He put the postcard down and pretended that he
never saw it.
Two minutes later, a large man in a hawaiian shirt
burst through the door. Sasuke decided that his technique
was flawed. He sent a letter to Master Chan, asking for his
assitance.
* * *
In a few weeks , in a cabin on the side of Mt. Fuji,
Master Chan will recieve a letter. Another young upstart
asking for assistance. He will throw the letter away and
pretend that he never saw it.
* * *
Sasuke rushed to Furinkan, to tell Kunou that his father had
returned. Hopefully, one of the other servants would see
to it that Kodachi was told about this. Sasuke parked his
motorcycle outside of the school and scaled the walls.
The gates were open, but it would be bad form for a ninja to
be seen.
* * *
Simultaneously, Kunou was in his European History class,
trying to decide what to do about Akane and the pigtailed girl.
Unfortunately, people like the teacher kept interrupting his
train of thought.
"Kunou! What was Louis XIV's response to the question of
the Spanish succession?"
Then it hit Kunou. There was but one thing for him to do.
"I would have them both!"
The teacher looked at his notes and nodded.
"Interesting way of putting it, Kunou. Louis XIV accepted
the terms of Charles X's will and decided that the Bourbons
should rule both Spain and France. In fact, he declared that
the Pyrinees didn't exist. However, Austria was..."
With his problem solved, Kunou started listening to his
teacher again.
* * *
Soun and Genma played a game of shogi. Genma was rather
impressed by Soun's technique. While Genma was merely
cheating, his friend was improvising new rules altogether.
Soun moved a piece and removed two of Genma's.
"Why did you take two of my pieces?"
"Reactor effect. Those two spaces were destroyed."
Genma thought for a moment, then nodded. Reactors.
Two could play this game. Genma moved three of his pieces
at once.
"You can't do that", cried Soun.
"Time vortex."
"There's no vortexes in this game. I checked before we started
this game."
"Are you sure?"
"Of course. You could have easily won the last game if you had
used the vortexes properly." Soun moved a piece. "There.
I control the reptillian square. Now all my pieces are lizard
pieces. I win."
Genma was wondering what game Soun was really playing. Genma
decided to play along, because it was a lot more fun than
conventional shogi, and because he wanted to beat Soun at this.
* * *
Sasuke knocked on the door of room 2-B. The teacher answered
and gave him permission to speak with Kunou. He relayed the
news.
"My father has arrived? I cannot let this class tarry me
any longer! I shall return home shortly. Give this to
Akane Tendou, Sasuke."
Kunou gave a hastily written letter to Sasuke, and
strode imperiously out of the classroom.
* * *
'Please meet me at the ice rink at 8 tonight. My
father has returned from a long voyage, so I shill be
unable to visit you before then.
-Tatewaki Kunou'
Akane looked the letter over on her way home from school.
Ranma was walking on a fence, as a male, behind her.
"Who's the letter from?"
"Kunou."
Ranma grimaced. "Oh. That creep."
"He is *NOT* a creep. He was...he was a perfect gentleman until
you showed up."
"It's not my fault that he has to stare at me like that."
"You probably enjoyed it."
"Maybe if you had a better figure, he'd be staring at you
like that also."
Akane shook the fence, knocking Ranma into onto the ground.
She angrily walked away.
* * *
Kunou thought about his father. He'd been out of town so long
that here in the city, he's been taken for lost and gone and
unknown for a long, long time. He had been talking about how
he could play the ukelele and surf, possibly at the same
time. Now he was back, going on about being a big music star
or suchlike. And he had said something about opening a
24-hour telescope shop, also.
* * *
As Akane walked home from the ice rink, it was obvious that she
was in a bad mood. There was a trail of bent garbage cans and
dented street lamps. Usually, Akane would have better sense than
to cause random property damage, but today was an especially bad
day. Within twenty-four hours, her father had declared that she was
engaged to some oafish stranger and Tatewaki had become enamoured
with that same stranger. And just when it seemed that things were
getting better, two more strangers had tried to get between them.
Tatewaki had apologized and given her a nice bouquet of flowers.
The two of them were about to go skating when some horrid girl
in a pink leotard grabbed the flowers and insisted that they were
hers. Someone else had been kind enough to take the flowers from
that girl, but he demanded a kiss before he would return them.
Fortunately, Tatewaki knew how to deal with that situation. That
boy was sprawled on the floor, clutching his sides in extreme pain
in a matter of seconds. It wasn't that Akane liked it when people
were hurt, but she was NOT going to let people treat her like
that. Just when it seemed that things were about to get back
to normal, that boy challenged them to a Martial Arts Pairs
Skating competition, and Tatewaki accepted. Someone had told
her that those two people were Mikado Sanzenin and Azusa
Shiratori, national skating champions. But that wouldn't save
them. They ruined a good date and they would pay.
Unfortunately, Akane had to learn how to skate within two days.
* * *
The next day, Tuesday, Akane and Ranma walked home from
school. Fortunately, it hadn't rained and Kunou had kept quiet
about the mysterious pig-tailed girl. Kaori didn't show up
either, Ranma noticed. If it wasn't for Ranma and his father
still living at her house, Akane would have sworn that the last
two days hadn't happened. Fortunately, Ranma had agreed
to teach her how to skate. "Well," thought Akane, "I guess
that he's good for something after all."
* * *
Kodachi wandered through the mall. She had heard that her
father had returned. Unfortunately, she didn't get a chance
to see him when he was at home, because he left to set up
a new store. It was a telescope shop, and it was open
twenty-four hours a day. Her father had refused to hire help
and insisted that he could handle his own business. From what
she had heard about him, Kodachi was afraid that he wouldn't eat
or sleep. She brought him a basket of homemade cookies which
would make sure that he did both.
* * *
Ranma and Akane were at the ice rink. Ranma was practicing a
kata while on skates. He threw two punches. "Can't you at
least keep your balance, Akane?" He front-kicked at the air in
front of him.
"I've never skated before."
Ranma shifted stances into a block. "Has Kunou?"
Akane let go of the wall that she was clinging too. "I don't
believe so." Her left leg slid out from under her.
Ranma turned and assumed at cat stance. "Then what kind of
date did you expect to have at an ice rink?" Ranma slid
forwards, threw a backhand and resumed a stationary cat stance
in one fluid motion.
Akane grabbed the wall again in desparation. "What are you
trying to imply?"
Ranma threw a kick out of crane stance. "Nothing. I just
think that it's odd that two people who can't skate would get
together at the ice rink." Ranma blocked a kick from the
imaginary opponents.
Akane pushed herself off of the wall. She glided forwards.
"This isn't any of your business you know!" She ran out of
momentum. She tried to move forwards, but fell over. She got
up again, but fell down.
Ranma turned and repeated his previous series of techniques.
"Alright, alright. Now, try to stand up again."
* * *
Kodachi entered the store. She didn't see anyone inside.
The store itself was blue. The walls and carpet were
the same shade of off-blue, and blue light shone down
from the ceiling. Kodachi thought that the telescopes
were white, but in this light, it was anyone's guess.
She felt something move behind her and leapt away. She turned
to see a large man in a Hawaiian shirt swing an electric razor
at her.
"Now you stop right there, girl! You gon' mix it up with me?"
Kodachi hadn't brought a weapon with her. She grabbed a
telescope and smashed it over the man's head, knocking the
miniature palm tree off.
"Tell me what you did to my father?"
"Aloha, girl! What be dat you want?"
Kodachi grabbed the man by the collar of his Hawaiian shirt.
"What did you do to the man who runs this shop?"
"I da Kahuna now. I run dis shop."
"No. What did you do to the man who is supposed to run this shop."
"I run dis shop."
Kodachi didn't like dealing with people who couldn't answer
simple questions. She knocked the man over. "If I find out
that you've done anything to my father, you will be seriously
hurt. Understand?"
The man blankly nodded. Kodachi left the store and went
home.
When she was out of range, the man shouted "I gona remembah
dis, sistah!"
* * *
Soun Tendou was sitting at the dining-room table, reading a
newspaper. He put it down to see Ranma on the opposite side of
the table.
"Ranma, do you know where Akane is?" asked Soun.
"She's down at the ice rink. Her and Kunou are gonna fight
some other skaters. I thought you heard."
Genma leapt out from behind a chair. "She's your fiancee,
boy. You ought to be the one fighting beside her."
"I don't care about that marriage thing."
Genma adjusted his glasses and grinned evilly. "Well, it just
happens that we've only got enough food for three people here."
"What?!"
"Looks like you'll have to find somewhere else to eat."
Both Soun and Genma were eating pork curry. Ranma grabbed at
Genma's plate, but Genma dodged.
"Ha! You've never been able to take my food before. What
makes you think that you'll get it now, boy?"
Ranma had to concede that. His father was a good martial artist,
but he was one of the best when it came to guarding food.
"And before you try it, Tendou is as good at it as I am",
Genma said.
Ranma reached for the unattended plate.
"Please don't take my dinner", Kasumi said.
Ranma left the plate there and walked towards the refrigerator.
He opened it to find two bottles of water and a jar of mustard.
"I suppose I'll have to go shopping tomorrow", said Kasumi.
"Then I'll get food somewhere else."
"You can't, Ranma! All the restaurants are closed. Everyone is at
the skating match tonight. Maybe you can buy something from the
vendors there."
"I thought that you didn't know about the skating match."
"We never said that."
Ranma hung his head in resignation and left towards the ice
rink. He figured that there were at least a hundred
restaurants in Tokyo and that they couldn't close all of them
just because of some impromptu ice fight.
"See, Saotome! Ranma and Akane are already acting like a
perfect couple."
Genma didn't understand his friend's logic at all, but he knew
that Tendou's heart was in the right place.
* * *
Kunou and Akane were both dressed to skate. His usual kendo
outfit had been replaced with a tuxedo. She wore a grey and
pink dress. As they stepped onto the ice, they heard the crowd
cheer. Unfortunately, it looked as if they were cheering for
the other team. The Mikado Sanzenin Fanclub appeared to take
up a quarter of the seats. Akane didn't bother counting
Shiratori's following.
"Tatewaki"
"Yes?"
"We're going to lose, you know."
"That is a poor attitude. Remember what they did to us. Vengeance
shall be ours, for the wrath of Heaven is slow but sure."
Akane's face darkened in anger. She nodded.
* * *
Akane and Kunou stood their ground as Mikado and Azusa
rushed towards them. This was mostly because neither
Akane nor Kunou was sure that they could move forwards
without falling over.
Azusa swung low, knocking Kunou off of his feet. Mikado
glided towards Akane. "Hello, Akane Tendou. I, Mikado
Sanzenin, have kissed ninety-nine girls, each more beautiful
than the last. You shall be the hundredth. Before the end of
the match, you shall see both my charm and the power of
Martial Arts skating". Akane gut-punched him. The momentum
from her punch just caused her to fall backwards.
Mikado grabbed Tatewaki Kunou. "Prepare yourself for the
Dance of Death!" Mikado and Kunou began to spin.
* * *
Ranma peered into a restaurant window. Just like the last
twelve, it was closed. Maybe the old man was right, after
all. Ranma headed to the ice rink.
* * *
Kunou collapsed.
Mikado ran a comb through his hair. "One hundred and eight
punches in one minute. I have dealt with him. Now I shall
deal with you, Miss Tendou."
"Mikado! You promised Azusa that we could spin them around!
You're not gonna kiss her until we do the couple cleaver."
Azusa glared at her parner. He could be so annoying at
times. She'd find somebody else to skate with if he wasn't the
best at what he did.
Mikado glared at his partner. She could be so annoying at
times. He'd find somebody else to skate with if she wasn't the
best at what she did.
Akane was hanging onto one of the walls of the rink. Mikado
skated towards her, with Azusa on his back. He threw her at
Akane. Akane used the wall for leverage to flip up, as she
grabbed Azusa with her legs and slammed her down onto the ice.
"You hurt widdle Azusa. That wasn't nice."
"You're the one who started this. You broke up a perfectly
good date."
Mikado grabbed Azusa's arm. "We'll break up a perfectly good
couple, too. No pair has survived intact yet.. I am Mikado
Sanzenin and your relationship shall not survive the night!"
"I don't care if you're the greatest living Chinaman. If you
try to come between us, I'll kill you!"
* * *
Ranma looked through the vendor stands at the ice rink, trying
to find something that was in his price range. If his dad was
gonna make him eat out, then he ought to at least lend him the
money.
* * *
Azusa picked Kunou up off of the ice and pulled him to the
middle of the rink. "He's kind of cute. Azusa will take
him home with her." Azusa sharpened her gaze towards Akane.
"Or are you going to do something about it?"
"Tatewaki! Do something!"
"But my love, it would not be fitting for a warrior such as
myself to strike a girl. I am powerless."
Azusa smiled. "Your loss." She leaned forwards to kiss him.
* * *
"Mikado, why is Azusa lying on her back all of a sudden?"
Akane glared at Azusa. "Tatewaki may not hit you, but I
will. Try that again and I'll really hurt you."
Tatewaki held Akane's hands in his own. "Thank you, Akane,
for your help and for your faith."
Azusa grabbed Kunou's ankles. Mikado lifted Azusa above his
head and began to spin. The crowd cheered as they saw the
Golden Pair's ultimate technique, the couple cleaver. Kunou
and Akane were soon whirling through the air at a remarkable
rate. Akane struggled to hold on.
Mikado grinned. "We have another nickname, you know. We are
the Anti-Matchmakers!"
"Azusa thinks that 'Golden Pair' sounds cuter."
"And the longer you hold on, the more it will hurt when you
let go. If you let go, Tatewaki, we will spare you."
"Hang on, Akane! Let my love keep us both together!"
"I can't! I don't have a good enough grip."
Akane felt her fingers slipping from Tatewaki's as the
momentum pulled them apart. She flew into a wall of the rink
and bounced onto the ice. Azusa dropped Tatewaki to the
ground. "Wai! Wai! The Goodbye Whirl worked again!" she
giggled.
* * *
Akane hurt all over. She couldn't move her left hand or focus
properly. The first thing she saw was Mikado standing over
her.
"Thank you, Akane. It comes as no surprise that my kiss could
rouse you from your --"
Mikado was thrown backwards by the force of Akane's punch.
Large cracks formed in the ice where he hit. That bastard
would pay for taking advantage of her like that. Akane
slumped backwards and lost consciousness.
* * *
"Ranma! How can you stand by and let him hurt your fiancee
like that?"
"Wha? How'd you get here, pops?"
"I walked."
"But I thought you were staying at home."
"I never said that. Now go out there and help her."
"I don't want to."
"Son, I'm not giving you a choice."
Ranma found himself flying towards the rink.
Genma snorted. "Any student of Anything Goes Martial Arts
should have seen that one coming."
* * *
Ranma fell hard on the cracks in the ice. The ice split,
covering him with freezing water. It would take someone like
pop to throw him into an ice fight without any skates.
"Pig-Tailed Girl!"
Ranma cursed his luck and his father as he stood up.
* * *
Kunou grabbed Ranma. Unfortunately, Azusa grabbed Ranma's
ankles and Mikado again hoisted Azusa above his head.
"Here we go again", Azusa sang.
"Let go of me, you idiot!"
"But, pig-tailed girl! My love for you will hold us both
together."
Ranma broke Kunou's grip, but he grabbed her hands again.
"Get off of me!"
* * *
After carrying this on for minute, Mikado collapsed. Kunou
landed by the hole in the ice, widening the cracks. Ranma
landed on his feet. Tatewaki looked down and saw a long, thin
sliver of ice between the cracks. He picked it up and began
to swing it. It wasn't exactly like a bokken, but it was
close enough. He began his speed-strike technique, sending a
wave of chilled air towards his opponent.
"Sanzenin! Prepare to die!"
After a few hits, the sword shattered and Mikado fell to
the ground.
* * *
Ranma leapt towards Azusa, throwing feints. Two kicks barely
missed either side of her head, and she lost her nerve.
"Mikado! Help me! That man is trying to hit me!"
Azusa shook Mikado's prone form, but he didn't get up.
"He's gonna hurt me if you don't do something, Mikado!"
Azusa started crying and ran towards the referee. "This isn't
fun anymore and I'm not playing with them again."
* * *
"And that's it, folks. The Golden Pair has lost by forfeit,
their first loss ever. Thank you all for coming. Good night"
* * *
End, Ch2
Character Profile: Kunou, Sr.
Age: 45
Well, so far he isn't the principal, so I can't call him
Principal Kunou. He is, by far, the craziest of the family
and the most modified major character. He's spent the
last eleven years in Hawaii. His obsessions include haircuts,
surfing and music. He's been given a good infusion of Brian Wilson
(the leader of the Beach Boys. Musical genius, but severely unhinged)
and returned to the Kunou family. As if they didn't already have
enough problems...(n.b. This doesn't count as a Ranma/Beach
Boys crossover..honest)
Character Profile: Mikado Sanzenin and Azusa Shiratori
Ages: 16
They are known as the Golden Pair, the champions of the
Martial Arts Skating world. He's obsessed with kissing
girls, she's obsessed with cute things. Together, they're
really really deadly.
