Well, in the introductory notes, along with warning Caroline 
Seawright not to read the story, he did mention that it was dark...

Absolutely. How many people does this horrible disease claim? If the
story
turns out fine, it leaves me all warm and fuzzy inside. Otherwise, I'm
left 
pretty depressed.
